A basic spec D4 auto with say cloth seats (don't start about leather again!), satnav, black interior, including say load guard and optional off road bits like sump guard etc would be a surefire seller to ease the D5 transition and offer something practical pending the new Defender.

That's what I have at the moment, SE spec, previously a GS, which were out sold by a mile by HSEs/Luxs

Mines bog standard, only options being xenons and privacy glass, 20" alloys added later

I went shooting today. There were many: Discovery 2, 3 and 4s, various Defenders, a series III, a Landcruiser, RRS2, a G Wagon and a few pickups. I know it wil cope well off road, but with dogs, guns and wellies etc I just can't see the D5 fitting in there and oddly no one else could either, including two chaps that have D5s on order. Laughing

The consensus was that LR have moved the brand to the city. No one disputed that they will sell loads, everyone felt that they have undermined the brand and what it stands for with the latest models. Other than off road capability, which is not essential for the town, the question was, what makes it different to the X5, Q7, XC90 and ML?

Anyway, the conversation was a distraction to a lousy day' shooting. Perhaps I should take up golf! Laughing

If people think Landrover are targeting "city types" why are they making it a better off reader than the D4?
Doesn't make sense.

I must be honest, looking at the new discovery 5 it does remind me of an in town vehicle perfect for the lady's with it smooth curved lines and soft trim ,lol were the discovery s up till then have that bulk square look ,looks as if it could take a hedge or two on if you no my meaning and that's why my wife likes it , u could imagine it pulling the disco 5 out when it gets stuck in its own splender ,let's be honest the brand has two wheel drives now and the strong pedigree of the past is being deluted for speed and it's overwhelming electronic extras all the while, its bad enough with the disco 3/4 software property's ! Land Rover should watch out because if they continue down this route they could lose the top spot for a good off roader, so my position is ,I'll keep the lr4 amen ! and possibly buy Lr5 when it's had a few years reviews by Joe public and that awful looking back end might grow on me ? But the car I'll be stuck with, lol, for all u slow chaps ! That is a forward to the future joke

Good points Sonny Smith & I tend to agree, my D4 especially with the 18" wheels will go anywhere & I love it.
But if I don't trade it now I'm not sure I could afford a new Landrover from scratch in the future, my aim is to get the new Defender (hopefully a SVO) in 4/5 years as a long term "retirement" vehicle, possibly also a small electric/ hydrogen car for short trips.

2wd was introduced to meet emission targets. Only 2wd model available at the moment is Evoque, the DS e-capability has 4wd but meets the 129g/km (not sure of exact figures) emission target.

Just pimp the D4 with extra mods and buy an i3. You'll save tens of thousands of pounds and lose not a jot of functionality (if anything you'll retain some you'll lose)

Just a thought Thumbs Up

Oh keep up will you! Laughing Whistle

Split tailgate (the new flap doesn't give as much seating space nor allows use as a standing platform unlike previous)

Comfortable 3 seats in Row 2

Flat load space

More square load space facilitating easier loading

Wide range of mods and accessories (D5 will catch up but will take 18 months I'd imagine)

Lots of cash retained

And not being treated like a yummy mummy of course Wink

All that said I'm sure it'll be a great car but I do wish people would just say "I'm buying it because it's shiny" and admit it, as it gives nothing the outgoing D4 has right now Wink

Well I would be happy to use one shooting, we had a play with a Bentley a few weeks ago, that is too bling to throw dogs and guns in but it did cope fine but we were in Surrey Laughing

It does have a flat loadspace.

Why do we need to explain why we're buying one?

But for anyone who wants to know, my current one is on 2 year PCP so due next year, with an offer of a strong trade in on my current one and the slight chance to beat the new VED rules I'll change early. Looked at other cars including the XC90 but though more expensive I've chosen to stick with Discovery which will probably be my last LR.

I'm just glad I've not seen one in the flesh yet as I'm as much as sucker for something shiny as the rest of you Rolling with laughter

Saw my first Bentyaga yesterday. Couldn't decide on the styling, good to see something trying to be different with bold coachlines but seemed small in the boot department from the outside.

What did you think of it actually getting in one and experiencing it?
