v8 mpg
Well the v8 turned 150000 mls earlier this month so I thought i'd do a couple of brim to brim fuel checks, the on-board has been telling me 22.1 which I thought was very hopeful and it was, my calculations indicate 19.2 mpg which was over various long and short journeys so i'm happy with that. It's got a couple of issues that hopefully will be sorted in early January when its going into the workshop, the rear parking sensors and the reduced engine performance message that pings up from time to time but doesn't seem to make any difference to the running just a couple of slow speed stalls, I'd like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 54 disco 3 4.4 v8 now gone

Those are great numbers! I have been averaging 8.1 mpg for the past few years with mainly city driving. 16 D4 Landmark

My NYC 05 D3 V8 has about 103k now and averages about 19-20 on highway. City 13-14 NYC traffic.
My girls Cali 05 D3 V8 has about 75,800 miles averages great about 22-23 mpg highway (it's crazy) City about 14-15mpg.

In the USA is mile per gallon. gallon of premium 93 in NYC near me its about $2.89 at BP
in Burbank, CA Costco premium 91 (no 93 in cali) $2.64
Driving my girls D3 from LA to Palm Springs, Ca 117 miles. It cost us about $20. one way that's over a 2hr drive with bad LA traffic for about 20 miles. On the days that we have been super lucky and have had no traffic it cost us about $17.

1.2 US gallons to a UK, so 10mpg US figures would equate to 12mpg UK.
Mine is about 1500 miles short of 150,000 miles and averages 14.5mpg on LPG and 17.8mpg on Petrol.==================================

I must say i'm light with the right foot because the old girl is getting on! but I do run on petrol only no lpg and I live in quite a light traffic area (the Cotswolds).54 disco 3 4.4 v8 now gone

First trip down to Cornwall in the V8. Gave up trying to be eco and decided to catch the last light to walk the dogs on the beach. Dogs very happy.
Topped it up tonight so around 20.6mpg. Dash is telling me 21.5mpg.
V8 sounds great on the back lanes. So smooth, but having to re-adjust to the lack of low down torque. (Odd to see 3500rpm on the counter in such a big vehicle). Handles well, maybe too well.
The V8 reminds me of a two stroke A 4x4 "CR500"

It goes very quietly. It doesn't go that quickly. Compared to my D3 2.7 it's about the same. It gets left way behind compared to my D4 3.0 STDV6, which is a far better set up. I don't know what the LR4 5.0 V8 is like or the LR3 early V6. I like the V8 because it's quiet and has great mid-range torque, but you would need to drive it hard to make it seem fast.PAGODA

Reading all these TD D3/4 cam belt tensioner, rod and crankshaft horrors. What a terrible situation. I am glad to have a 4.4 V8 any day. While the TD D4 passes me because it might be faster I will coast past it once it's engine fails. Who cares to have more power when its from an unreliable TD engine.

Dave, I think you have to be very careful when you say its an unreliable engine - of the thousands that have been built, there is a very very small incidence of failure. But on forums like this, you only ever hear of the ones that fail.Mark.

I'm with you dave, I like the v8 its very straightforward and quiet, the thought of cambelts and turbos' worries me but I suppose i'll have to bite the bullet one day..... or maybe an imported 5.0 v8 54 disco 3 4.4 v8 now gone

I also love my V8 for similar reasons (and it sounds lovely!). However I am pretty impressed that you are getting 20+mpg, I can only get that if I'm on a long run on a busy motorway that results in me driving 55-60 the whole way. General driving on LPG (which is usually 10% or so worse than petrol) I get between 13 and 16mpg

Comparison
On the motorway my 04 Clio 1.2 does 60mph at 3000 rpm, the D3 V8 does 90 mph if I were to let it at 3000 rpm.
The Clio feels stressed and cant be good for mpg if it is revving highly although as pumping petrol it is much smaller volume so still more efficient 30-40mpg verses 18mpg if I am luckySeries 1 V8
