Travellers
Just seen on the news that 22 travellers van's descended upon a school playing field in Sussex today and were later evicted by police. Apparently they cut the locks on gates to gain entry. I wonder if anyone on here did the same and would be allowed to leave without prosecution? A spokesman said they are on their way to Scotland now. Interestingly, I was in Applecross last week and about 15 travellers vans have set up camp on the northern entrance to Applecross. They were newly arrived but already the place looked a mess. I've not seen that before at Applecross or the passes. I don't have a problem in general with travellers but I do with anyone who expects something from the state ( somewhere to stop) but contributes nothing but rubbish they leave behind ( not all travellers do this). It sort of annoyed me that a prestige landscape could be ruined, or one small car park sized part of it, by people who move on without any apparent retribution. Baffles me.

Looks like a D3\4 gathering of late ....used to be tents
We used to get loads here every August when they came to convert their "hard earned" cash into Mercs and Porches. Seemed to have failed off, possibly helped by our loveable local scrotes using them for target practice with air rifles when they parked on, and ruined, the footie pitches next to the Henry Boddington pub..

I've been in Appleby when the travellers arrive and it can be entertaining and the music can be good.
But I'm talking about the Applecross penninsular in north west Scotland which is very familiar with many on here. I'm unaware that it's a regular destination for travellers, but could be wrong, as I've never seen them there before for all the years I've gone there. Not sure what the law is in Scotland about putting up camp where you want but I think it's a bit more tolerant than England. I can see the attraction during the summer months if so.

We get a fair few around. Some of the favoured spots have been blocked off, which has unfortunate knock-on for local, and tourist, amenity.
When they park up by the loch down the road from us, the local councillor pays them a visit, urges them to be respectful and that if they are aggro from both sides can be minimised. It seems to make a bit of a difference. Her approach to it is one of the biggest reasons our local councillor gets my vote.
Normally when they're up a few bicycles will go missing and a bit of mess will be created.
Thankfully, the council still provide free skips for beach cleaning efforts.
The biggest issue we've had with things going missing was a Romanian gang up from Glasgow.
Plenty of tools and quad bikes went missing that time.
The gang were caught but many/most of the items were not recovered.
That said, it does seem rare that property crime doesn't get solved...benefit of having only one or two

Of course the issue for the Police is proving which one did the deed. Cutting the locks would be criminal damage, parking on someone's land is trespass. The first is a Police issue, the second isn't.
If you and twenty mates piled up somewhere and one of you "made the gate accessible", how would the Police deal with it? Unless there was a witness, they're unable to charge anyone. You all pitching up on the land isn't a Police issue thereafter, it's simple trespass which is a civil issue between you and them.

There was a group came up here and parked on some land, the owner arrived with his large excavator, his yards across the road, started digging a deep trench a good 7 foot deep, gave them the option to move on before he completed the whole excavation, which they did 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

The Polis in Scotland have a non harassment policy regarding travellers whom they view as a minority ethnic group. In other words if they encamp, tough, don't call us.
The main trick seems to be if you place boulders to prevent them taking their vans onto land to start with. I remember about 30-40 travelers encamped on about an acre of land at the Inverness retail park, they were there about a year.
Maybe they are just taking their time doing the NC500 or maybe they are just admiring all the lovely cars and motorcycles doing the route.

I was passing Lochcarron today. There's a group of travllers both to the north and south of the place. They must be intending to stay as I saw council wheelie bins about in both places.
