Rubber seal restorer / sealer
I'm looking for a couple of suitable products which will (a) renovate a rubber seal which runs round part of the back of my wife's Saab convertible, and (b) will help seal it onto the metal when it is replaced. The seal is in one piece but is looking as if it is beginning to perish. Also, I need something which will go along the inside slot of the seal to help stop moisture getting between it and the metal lip it grips onto.
Anyone know of the best products for these tasks?

Krytox is a product used in service environment. Universally banned in manufacturing sites in 90's as contains silicon which can really up a paint plant...... (their tech sheets now say contains no silicon)
If it's not too badly worn (if it's cracked it's ed) baby oil is a cheap option, certainly give it a nice sheen.
Graphite motorbike chain lube works too

This is the stuff you need, penetrates and softens.
Gummi Pflege Stift., was advised to use it from one of the detailing forums.
My XK hand book has listed CARBAFLO KSP 105 listed as the treatment for seals
which is like rocking hose POO to find,...Ive tried
...however vehicle warranties being what they are I had to use
here it shows that the roll-on application is far less wasteful than a spray - I've used both
strangely - Jaguar DONT sell this (which is plumb ridiculous)
OK - the alternatives: WD-40 performance SILICONE spray
http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p89943
this works too...ive tried it
its best to spray this onto cotton pan & rub it on - saves overspray onto paint & upholstery
- my thoughts...its OK for me to use this however its my risk if in
time it burgers up the cabriolet seals - thats why I will go back to CARBAFLO
if you buy & fit new seals you've got to make the decision for yourself - Id go CARBAFLO
WD do have a water resistant silicone spray - bit it doesn't stay it can be used on RUBBER - risk.
....maybe there are other makes of Silicone - but you've got to check the use on RUBBER
hope this helps a bitBREXIT - done properly.

Silicon is not good on car paintwork. If it contaminates it and you need paint repair you're looking at stripping back to bare metal in the prep stage
Agreed with what you've said about silicone
yet zero on the spray cans.
....the carbaflo stuff is the one listed by Jag
I'll check with FUCHS to see if this is SILICONE
the video shows the applicators that BMW use
it also shows (i believe) a SABB 900 soft top getting the treatment
I have seen dealers use this to eliminate squeaks & rattles....you'd need a lot of Carbaflo to this on a "squirt & hope basis"BREXIT - done properly.

Mmm. I was going to use standard silicone sealant out of a tube to help grip the rubber seal to the metal lip in the car body. Any suggestions for anything else?
To seal the rubber to bodywork...not the seal between the cabriolet hood bottom edge & the tonneau cover when you open the hood ?
Why do you want to do this ?
If you've new OEM seals & undamaged bodywork this should be weather proof enough I'd have thought ?
If you are doubting this use a smear of waterproof grease....& I mean a smear.
New seals won't be cheap. That's why I really look after the ones I have (cost of Carbaflo a small price to pay.
Putting silicone sealer onto new seals I would have thought detrimental & an absolute last resort if you
have leakage of water in. If you have its more likely to be the sealing face between the moving part of the cabriolet hood edge & the fixed tonneau....difficult to find I know but far more likely.
What I've explained in my first post is what's in my XK manual for care of the rubber seal (bottom of the actual cabriolet hood all around this) to prevent sticking, the rubber etc.
Above all don't make a step you can't reverse - you may not seal a leak & if you have to take the new seal off it may get damaged....I was taught to use silicone sealer on top of a smear of light oil (3in1) so if you have to remove the silicone comes away like a gasket. A marine engineering dodge not a bodge.
I haven't seen the krytox Astonbuilder is suggesting
It really depends on what exactly you trying to sort.
Seals that are passed thier useful life ?
Seals that are new (or better than the one you have - which to me nead zero except maybe a smear of oil or grease)BREXIT - done properly.
