SWMBO, Garages still taking the ****
I hate garages, SWMBO has a 2005 Mitsubishi Colt and she insists on taking it to the main dealer for work and MOT But it only has 39k miles and is in excellent condition.
Anyway, she took it down yesterday for an MOT and service, and they called back in the afternoon to update her. I was in a work call, but I could hear her say "What Red lines, oh no, New brakes, New pads, rear brakes not working!!!"
I paused my call and shouted at her to tell them she'll call back.......we then had a chat and she said that they had a traffic light system and that the rear brakes were not working and front ones needed new discs and pads, there was also water in the brake fluid. Total costs would be £450+
I asked if the car had passed the MOT, SWMBO said that she thought it had failed they has said "Red Lines" on brakes front and rear. So I called them back
Me = Did the car pass the MOT?
Them = YES
Me = Did the car have any advisories?
Them = Yes, rear break not balanced
Me = What the hell are these 'Red Lines' then
Them = System they use to advise customers when car is in for a service
Me = If RED line, then why did car pass the MOT
Them = Um
Me = We'll pick the car up later, thanks for your time
It really annoys me that they try and bamboozle people with these terms just to get more work out of them and at dealer prices!!!!!
Seems we have a sticking caliper on the rear, which I'll sort this weekend, discs look fine on the front, but the pads are low, so I'll order a new set also

SWMBO had a VW and used take it to main dealer even after Warranty ran out. They had similar sales tactics on the service desk. Got to the point I would stick a note on the steering wheel stating exactly what we needed doing and to ring my mobile if any extra work is considered necessary to agree it.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

Brakes are LRs favourite.
My 12MY apparently needed new brakes all round despite it passing its MOT with only an advisory on the front suspension bushes. Needless to say they didn't get done as I was trading it in for the DS anyway and I bet they sold my D4 as is.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green
Swmbo took her Jazz to the main dealer up until a few years ago when the declared the brakes nearering the limit. £240 I think they wanted for the fronts. Said no, picked it up and bought new brakes all round to do myself later.
Got home had a look and nothing wrong with them.
Still fine 3 years later.
They should know that based on the mileage she has done that at 3k a year they ain't going to wear out quickly.Mark.

I have a VW UP pool car for my business.
We had the "red" line, strong advise that you replace the rear tyres, rear brakes and brake fluid. We said fine, crack on but its on a maintenance plan which includes tyres.
They came back and said none of the items now needed doing. After an amusing conversation they decided to change the tyres under the original list.

Had same issue with LR dealer " Health check" advising new front pads required as 90% worn. Got new pads myself from AF and then found when they all had 6mm + left. Also between two heath checks the tyres had magically increased tread depth !

These stories are examples of fraudulent behaviour on the part of the garages. They should be getting reported to Trading Standards who, once there are enough reports, can give them a good kicking.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Just had similar last month with the wife's Mini. Amber warning on brake pads and discs! 16k miles in this car it's 4yr old. Discs are rusty ( nowt wrong with them)!!! Pads worn and will need changing , fine with that I can do it ! It's just ripping the . Also want £500 to fix a the AC condenser which has some fins bust, it still works. It's on a the mini service plan but hate the condition based servicing . Also was told the brake fluid needs changed , should be done every 2 yrs and you only get 1 paid change on the plan . Ripping my knitting they are
