Where do you start?
Going to pick up my first ever LR next week. It is a 2006 D3 HSE. It has done 120k and has a LR service history.
I have been a Shogun owner in the past (and indeed still have one) but I needed something to tow 3.5t and that narrows the choices down a bit. American or British!!
I have to admit to being a bit nervous of the LR reliability reputation but hopefully if I take care of it, it will take care of me. And I don't mind doing that.
I have spent a lot of time going through the forum posts (I really can't thank the contributors enough for the information on here) and it is a fantastic place for information but there is so much that it gets a bit hard to know where to start.
What do I do first on the maintenance list? Prevention being better than cure.
Or should the question be - What should be on that list?
If I can get some advice then I will put a list together and I will then sort through the 1000's of post to find out how to do these jobs. Though, I should say that I am reasonable on the tools but a long way off being an expert.
I hope nobody objects to me asking on my first post having not yet contributed anything at all.
Howdy....
The 1st thing is knowing what you've taken on.
Service / repair history....you need to scrutinise this
You're looking for:
Oil pump housing
Cam shaft belts
What's been done with brakes
Suspension air compressor
All the suspension parts
If it's an Auto if the system has been flushed.
Others will no doubt elaborate on this...BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

My second post to the forum.
So I got my D3 in Nov with 76k. Luckily I got warranty.
Transfer Box needed to be replaced and covered under warranty.
I drained and replaced the front and rear diff (both were brown oil with a lot of swarf) 82k
OS Front Bearing 86k - changed both with Timken
Since then the lower wish bone NS failed, both were replaced. 87k
I've done 3 services - 6k in between to make sure.
Suffered suspension error and drop to bump stops mid journey - this was caused due to poor wheel alignment would you believe and hasn't happened since!
Blanked EGR valve, error after this, but using 2 stroke removes error.
Brakes just replaced at 91k along with two new tyres.
Thats it so far, MOT just picked up that the dust cover on the rear air suspension has a split, but thats £18 from Brit Part.
So really the only failure was the wishbone, transfer box and bearing. Of which the transfer box apparently was just unlucky with that mileage. The rest is just wear and tear really.

Second that, I made sure the cambelts had all been changed. The air compressor was already upgraded prior to my ownership and the gearbox flush and service is next on my list.

Thanks for a quick reply.
What I know at the moment is the compressor has been changed and all the cambelts are being done before I pick it up. Will check that though.
It has a main dealer history up to the last service which was undertaken by a Land Rover indy. However, I will have a good look through the service history to see what has been done.
There seems to be a huge list of things once you start reading the forum, ERG, MAF, Auto box, tail gate struts and so on.
All looks a bit overwhelming but probably (hope so anyway) alright if I work my way through it methodically.

Thanks, I will get the oil pump changed, water pump?? and auto box flush whilst they are doing the belts then.
Going to be an interesting journey, 650 miles from dealer back home here in France. Add to that I am bring a 2.7t digger back with me at the sametime. I must be mad.

Just had a chat with Paul at Broadfields and they are going to check the oil pump, mega flush the auto box and blank off the ERG valves.
He was very helpful and explained a number of issues and whilst he is really busy he is going to get these done before I pick up the digger.
Can't ask more than that!

This is my list so far but if anyone thinks I have missed something then please let me know and I will add to it. No doubt the more I read the forum posts the more I will add to it anyway
Check for chaffing on the cables hidden behind the plastic flap in the near side rear wheel arch?
Change front and rear diff oil
I can see that this is going to be a car that needs a bit off effort to keep it going.
If anyone is interested I will update on the 650 mile journey home towing the new digger.

What about checking for chaffing on the cables hidden behind the plastic flap in the near side rear wheel arch? I added a bit of insulation tape around a bundle of wires that look vulnerable when I had the rear wheels off last week.

Apart from three replies (thank you for those) there has not been a lot of input from members. So I am slowly working my way through the posts.
Door and tailgate problems have come up a lot but I am not sure if this a problem that happens on all doors or just the front doors?
With the tailgate problem, is that top and bottom and is that two latches or is it just one latch?
Who knows, the final list might be of use to somebody else who has just brought a D3.
Perhaps this post is in the wrong place, if it is then let me know.

No mention of the electric park brake! - these need servicing every 50 miles if used off road, should be part of the service but often missed, at least have them blown out and cleaned before your journey and take a good jack with you for both car and trailer, the standard jack is unreliable It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The very first item you need to add to your tool box is an Iid tool even before a jack It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
