Am I getting paranoid?
Im the worst car buyer ever...
Guys.... Im probably getting paranoid here but, Ive been looking at a D4 Commercial on a 63 plate.
HPI check done which brought up a very slight mileage discrepancy 89k to 92k so nobody would clock it for that much....
The V5 (as does HPI) show it as class N1 so £240 road tax.. but in the HPI report it says road tax £520
The next bit is me not knowing enough but HPI says its got a 6 speed box but some crap Ive read on the net shows 2012 plus as having an 8 speed box... Is that right?
Went for an online insurance quote and it cant quote it as a van when I enter the reg and then puts me through to the car side but its a commercial panel van..
Am I being paranoid? Im gonna ring HPI up tomorrow and verify the tax thing...
Any other suggestions to check it out?
I should leave this to the missus..

I wasn't aware that they made a D4 commercial with the 8 speed transmission, I might be wrong, it's been known on more than one occasion.
I think that the tax is due to the emissions from the engine and if it's the SDV6 then it will be £520 rather than the lower amount.
It's quite possible one source is confused, or both may be confused for different reasons.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Commercial did come as 8 speed also the commercial rate of tax is cheaper for some reason.

Can't help with most of these questions, other than the 8 speed came in on MY12 (mine is registered Dec 2011 and is MY12 8 speed). But easy way to tell (I assume you have seen interior) is whether it has a stick or dial as a gear selector - stick is 6 speed, dial is 8 speed.MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff
If you are willing to pm me the VIN number I can look on Topix through work (JLR) and get the build information for you. That way it's a good source of what it should be.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Picture shows a dial rather than a stick.
Hpi check says 6 speed...

Of DVLA thinks it's N1, which it does (tx for the PM), then surely that's what matters?

Ive decided to walk away from it which Im gutted about because it has a nice spec at the right money but there was so many bits of information (little bits) that didnt match what the HPI report came up with I couldnt be 100% confident in it
Thanks for all your input guys

You might have been a bit hasty there due to HPI rubbish data.
1. Yes, you can have a commercial D4 in 63 Plate
2. In Autumn 2013, the D4 moved over to the facelift model (4.5 we call it), so if this is a late 63 Plate it would have lower tax, £250 ish rather than the £520 tax for the pre-facelift 63 Plate
3. HPI is wrong with 6 Speed - anything from around 2012 is 8 speed and has the rotary dial. This is 100% 8 speed
4. 89 -92k is not a discrepancy I'd be worried about personally
Pics on front end would potentiality clear up the 4.5 facelift issue, unless retro-mod

My local landrover mechanic (independent) also warned me about crank issues and the potential cost. Said if you like spending money get a D4 or D3...
Everything has just knocked my confidence in it tbh.

Yes, they have a bit of a habit of snapping the glorified twiglet that LR fitted as a crankshaft but that's what a warranty is for. You're not going to get away from that risk with a D4, even pretty new ones.

You can prob buy a 3rd party warranty, even at that mileage.
