OBD diagnostic tool
OK can't afford and not sure I could trust myself with an IID tool
Would getting an OBD diagnostic tool provide sufficient information for me to laugh at the type of garages that rip people off?
If a useful purchase any suggestions as to make, model / supplier?

Sorry, but if that is the reason for buying one, may I suggest that you find a good indy that you trust instead.
The fault codes take some understanding and don't give you the exact solution.

The fault codes discovered would be the same as displayed on an IID, they are read from the vehicle.
So like you I could glean knowledge from the forum here, I could clear codes and reset warning lights but wouldn't be able to make any changes to the vehicle set up.
I have a local indy that has variable reliability, not usually the fault of the mechanics. Regardless I like to know whats going on.
Anyone else?

Nothing to worry about, the good peeps at GAP have anticipated techical numpties like me and have made it pretty much idiot proof. Lots of safeguard and checks in place. Even at my tech level there is much you can do with it, I wouldn't want to be without mine.
Fester, you'll want one that can deliver the more detailed Jag/LR specific codes and give some context to the codes rather than a generic OBD one.
The iCarsoft LRii or the Foxwell NT510 spring to mind, with the Foxwell being more complex, allowing some more detailed diagnosis and testing but needing a fair bit more knowledge to get the best out of it.
If you want to read LR specific codes and have some understanding of what they mean, the LRii is pretty good and can often be had on offer.

Maybe should have left it at that.
The local indy is also small and therefore appointments can be way off in the future. So in situations like now when I'm getting intermitent reduced performance (red triangle on it's own, red triangle and engine light, engine light on it's own and clear) knowing what the underlying codes are possibly pointing at would either put my mind at rest or have me low loadering it to the garage.

If those wonderful peeps at GAP could reduce the price quite a bit, I'd trust that the dangerous bits were well protected and buy one.

Keep an eye out for one second hand, they do come up from time to time. But they don't sell for that much under GB prices.

Before you hit the "buy" button, I may be selling my LRii as I have just ordered an NT510 for the MINI and can add JLR software to it so it covers all 3 of my vehicles (the LRii covers all JLR stuff but not other makes).
If I do go down that route to have a single diagnostic device I'll give you a shout? The NT510 will be with me tomorrow afternoon so will know over the weekend if it does what I need.
