Winter tyres
What are the thoughts on fitting winter tyres to your disco's?
Now coming from an Audi A6 with Quattro I'm no stranger to 4 wheel drive and had rrclassic. My Quattro was fitted with winter tyres every year and I have to say the only time I ever got it stuck was the day after I bought it , with summer tyres and painted on tread.
Though it's not so much the getting stuck as the stopping, winter tyres are proven to reduce stopping distances.
So my new disco has 20's fitted and cooper zeon ltz's with 7mm all round, I can't find a snowflake symbol so don't believe they are winter ready.
I may try a set of conti cross's but wanted to know if anyone has any firsthand experience of these tyres or any other at tyres in the winter?

I run Continental Cross Contact from about late October. Makes all the difference even on wet and muddy roads. Richard

for a good while the "in" winter tyre was Wintrac Extreme (which I have on my winter rims) but I know others have tried other brands more recently with success.

I have had both of the latest version of Vredestein Wintrac Extreme on my 19" winter wheels. They are a great tyre but the shoulders are in tatters from the low speed manoeuvring on full lock.
Im considering replacing them with General Grabber AT3. Not really a winter tyre but other winter brands are an extortionate price.

I use Vredestein Wintrac Extreme in winter, (the car spents quite a bit of time in a ski resort in the Alps) and are excellent in all conditions.

.
I've had the wintrac 4 extreme on for about two years about 60K+ KM. As above great tyres in all weather. I hadn't intended to but they stayed on both summers with no problems whatsoever. Even the hottest of days they held perfectly. But the shoulders on my fronts are worse for wear at this stage. I'll be changing before the winter but Wintrac 4s aren't available anymore. So I got a set of ATRs to go on soon.

I run Nokian SUV3 on mine in winter. Great tyres. But regardless of make, winter tyres are highly desirable IMO. They make a big difference.

Goodyear Ultragrip SUV on 19 inch wheels, certainly proved their worth on 2 trips to Austria last winter.

I had Nokian WR A3's on my Audi A4. In snow they are amazing, it basically become boring to drive in snow as their predictability was so high, you had to drive very fast to put any control in doubt. Just in wet and cold weather they give you great confidence. Done a ski holiday in Austria and although they are ready for it over there, i had no issues what so ever and total confidence.
I think cheaper end winter tyres are 10 times better than a top end summer tyre for winter in the uk. Disco's are a heavy lump so it's definitely a safe bet.

I have used wintrac's on all my discos in winter and I think they are brill. The Disco weighs 3 tonnes+ when loaded, you cant beat physics so when you are trying to come to a stop on ice you need all the help you can get to beat the inertia!
They give much better stopping but don't make you invincible its still a big car and you can easily get stuck or start sliding. I spun last year on ice at low speed and ended up facing the wrong way on the road!
I put Wintracs on my Disco a couple of years ago and was really surprised how much better and safer it was.
I've sold the disco and bought a 5series and one of the first things I got was a second set of rims with winters fitted - I will see how they behave come Octoberish when they go on Mark.

TBH Audi quattro and any land rover product especially later ones with traction will do well with pretty much any tyre in typical UK winters even hard ones.
Now RWD cars really do need proper winter tyres just to make progress.
