EGR blanking: Is reversal possible?
Guessing this is more “technical” rather than “mods”, but I thought I’d jump on the pre-MOT hysteria bandwagon.
Generally browsing the forums, stumbled on this and this.
The sentence putting the fear of my wife into me is
Quote:
Any modifications/removal to emissions related devices, this includes DPF'S and EGR's is now a major fail.
One of the things the guy who sold my D3 said as I was leaving was “oh, by the way, we blanked off the EGR.”
Having done my due diligence by researching LR3’s extensively over the last few months, I naturally had no clue what he was on about, smiled and replied “great!”
Didn’t know what EGR was, let alone blanking it off was a thing.
But, now, that parting comment is giving me a little bit of concern as the MOT is due in May.
I’ve seen lots about blanking the EGR, but can this be reversed? And any idea of parts and cost?
Hoping like hell Geoff is right and the MOT testers are going to struggle to pick it up anyway, but if they should then it will have to be reversed' and I’d been quite keen on starting to budget for that.
If when they blanked the egr's off they removed the pipes, then I suggest you try to find some pipes to refit. I never removed the pipes when I blanked them off for this very reason, Just by looking when everything is there its hard to tell if they have been blanked.
And if you have had a good software patch to patch them out then you should be ok.
mine was also blanked by PO - the pipes were removed so I need to get a pair of pipes, once the pipes are there they won't be able to fail it as they are not allowed to remove the cover to check if they actually go anywhere..........Pete

Thanks both for the reply.
Any links to photos of where this should be in the engine bay? Still trying to figure what goes where.

Thanks,
I looked with an inspection cam earlier, but kind of figured all was good.
Looking at this, I’m not so sure.
May have to think about getting my MOT in early to delay the issue until next year.

@XDAndy: Why not get the MoT done a little early, before the rules change? That way you’ll have nearly a whole year to see if all those that have removed their EGR’s are going to be able to get away with it, or not, before looking to have to refit the system (in whole or part).2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: FL2 as a second car

Hi Red,
I think that’s where I’m heading tbh.
Does indeed give me a year to figure out how everything pans out.
In the meantime I guess I deny everything as I’ve bought the car like this.
Main issue is MOT cert or not, once the changes come in, the car is still not in an MOTable state, so even if I get through the test ok if for any reason it gets discovered it could be problematic and the car is off the road until fixed.
Agreeably, it sounds a pretty low risk, but risk is risk.

If you do need to re instate the egr system, aside from the pipes etc, you may find that the intake butterfly and shaft have also been removed. Something else to source, unless the previous owner was thoughtful enough to pass all the parts on to you.D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

For those that have refitted the pipes...how do they fit with the blanking kit in place? I can see at one end, with longer bolts the lozenge shaped plates could just bolt over the blanks, but how does it work at the other end? I think that is why Stuart is asking the question below:

they only need to 'disappear' under the top cover - where they go/don't go after that doesn't matter Pete

Hi
couldn’t find discs anywhere so i’ve bought some 3mm stainless steel blanks
so that i can fit the blanks first onto the engine , then refit the pipes , other end i wont worry about, as i assume just blanking it one end will be suffice
so in theory , shouldn’t then be able to tell theyve been blanked with the thin blank between the engine and pipes
did also buy some black high temp ATV gasket sealer
