Hi all,
My first (but not my last) post, and it's a quick fire round.. Starters for 10, confiring allowed...Ready:
Looking at getting a Disco 3 (well never, what on a Discovery 3 forum ) but am very partial to the V8's running on LPG. Can't afford a new one so would have to be used.
Currenty we have 2 '96 300 series V8's both running on LPG, and am wanting any information, views on those who currently own/run a D3 V8 model on what they think.
1. Good purchase?
2. Fuel consumption figures - can i expect better from the d3, that on the 300 series models, or is it worse (3.9 compared to 4.4)
3. Anything to be wary of in buying one?
4. Any particular years to avoid, or isn't it really an issue
5. what to ensure has been done before purchase (recall's etc)
Had seen a very nice HSE in Silver with all the toys, 48k miles (04 model) at £22k but, no LPG conversion which is probably another £3k ontop.
many thanks for any/all info provided
regards

You'll probably gather by the overwhelming response that not many of us on here run with a V8, never mind an LPG converted one.
Sorry not of much use, but welcome to the site. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

thanks for the replies folks
ronp - thanks for the welcome , looks like it, couldn't find much reference using the search options, but hopefully there maybe someone out there.
Bill W - Thanks for the link. didn't think they were still selling the D2 or is it just an older stock item, that has only just been registered? Ideally looking at a D3 though, as I feel the D2 is to similar in looks to the 300 series and wouldn't be that much of a change (looks wise). The D3 on motorpoint would be nice but way out of our price range
Main reason for V8 is I begrudge paying the current cost for fuel with most going to the greedy government, hence running on LPG @ 50p/ltr instead.
cheers all

Gary, i have a v8 which i am about to have converted next month. £1800 with spare wheel tank option. Fuel consumption is virtually identical to my old disco 2 and the 2 300's i had before that.

raftrey - Woohoo - thanks for the info What capacity tank is that then, we're a bit spoiled with the 300 series as we have 120 litres on one and 75 litres capacity on the other (no bootspace loss), anything less would be a bit dissappointing range wise.
We travel to cornwall and currently plan our route there via LPG refueling stops, so would like to stop as little as possible
Any additional info you can give much appreciated e.g. What MPG are getting, we currently get around 11-13MPG, but have managed closer to 17-18 on long runs
cheers

Actual gas capacity will be 75 ltrs but dont forget you'll stil have the petrol tank. On petrol i am getting 14.5-15mpg with 75% of its life in traffic at the moment but on a good run with the caravan on i get around the 18-19 mark (70 mph ish). Oh, and one more thing, it goes like a rocket ship the instant you put your foot down 8(and you dont have to count to 5 like on the diesels).

3. Anything to be wary of in buying one?
I first tried to aquire a petrol before going with the diesel. My local independant LR mechanic said to go for the bmw engined petrol car and to walk away from any car with the jag engine - thin cylinder walls apparently

I have a V8 and will eventually go for LPG if I keep it for a lot longer (as is the current plan), but one thing to note is that the std petrol is way more efficient than the D1 and D2 V8's. I have got nearly 23 on a run, even with all the gear on it, but even pottering around in town 16 is achievable.
Let us know how you get on with the conversion though.

Craig.
I haven't had it done yet but due to getting punctures on a reguler basis a couple of years ago i had the tyres filled with a green coloured 'slime' so i dont need a spare as i haven't had one since.

I have green slime in my push bike tyres, not sure I would trust it on a d3 Craig

Mate, I have an 05 HSE V8 and love it. Good grunt, once I have the exhaust worked....better sound and on premium unleaded, pretty bluddy reasonable for a V8, best figures have been 13.9/100km, average around 14.5 and off road creeps up to around 15.8/100km's. The first 2 figures are a combo of surburban and highway driving, get the V8 you will love it. Plus definately more fuel efficient than D2 V8's quite a few in our club run them and mine with 220kw's gets better economy. Eventually when SWMBO lets me, I will be putting on a longe range tank whcih will give me close to 200litres as I already have the rear bar and carrier,

Craig. Apparently the military use it in their vehicles and over the last 2 years i haven't had one problem with punctures. What is there not to trust by the way?
