Lower steering UJ grease it up.
If I suspected my lower steering column UJ of causing a "feel" through the steering wheel. Would greasing it up temporarily relieve the problem thus indentifying it as the issue. Or would it not even help in the short term?

Its a 'sealed' joint, greasing probably wouldn't help as the grease won't penetrate into the needles, try spraying loads of penetrating oil (or even WD40) on to it and if you can get the front wheels off the ground 'work' the steering back and forth to 'free' it off, then try greasing it - chances are its a short time fix as it will stiffen up again after a few weeks or so, but worth a try.
If you really want - take the column out and do it on the bench, then you can see what you're up against

Thanks Biffysun, good advice, sure enough if it needs to come out I'm happy to replace it (once I've removed an upper and lower limb to pay for it). Got some work to do on brakes, so will give it a good squirt just to see if the situation improves for a day or so.

If you take it off it's possible to drill a hole in the senter off the joint and put in a grease fitting. Fill it up with wd40 or something first, then several times with grease (should pop out grease from all 4 end caps)
Car manufacturers forgot about the existence off grease fittings about 20 years ago.

Hi
Good call , is also suppose to snow this weekend
Would be awesome if it works and being able to save money and Wonder who will be the first one to try it
Funny enough On occasion when I’m full left lock turning onto my drive I sometimes get a knock , all the wishbones , roll bar , drop links are all fine so thinking if it may be a track rod end ????

Hi
Very good point ref the lack of grease fittings , useto be able to load prop ujs on the older landies
Would indeed be good if grease points were able to be installed in the props and steering , haven’t seen it done yet on the D3

The u joint is empty in the center, so no problems with drilling there. Did it on a prop shaft once.

Use use what you find, think the most common is M5 thread. It's a small joint, so the fitting need to be in the center, like this picture. And you will have to put the steering column in a 90 degree angle to be able to drill it offcourse.

Is this greasing point a suggested restoration for a knacked UJ or a good idea to prolong the life by maintaining a good one?

If its decent steel as u/js tend to be, most people wont have the right drills to fit a grease nipple.
I would say if you have gone to the effort to remove it to check it, just fit a new one, job done for the rest of the cars life.
Greasable u/js still wear out, Ive seen many incl steering column joints.
