Blue Smoke
I have a Disco 4 , having covered some 115,000 mls , on hard acceleration it now will blow blue smoke , should I be concerned ? Or is this to be expected?

I don't think that is normal mines done roughly the same mileage and when when accelerating hard it doesn't really smoke.

Could be the issue with the oil pooling in the drain pipe of the second turbo then being sucked through turbo on hard acceleration.
There is a mod to prevent this and a kit available from land rover. Lots of info on how to do it if that's the issue on the site. IID Tool

After a week or two just pootling round town, my first trip onto the bypass with foot down invariably produces a brief cloud of blue smoke. If I'm on motorways more often, then I never notice blue smoke even under some hard acceleration.
Two years ago I had the turbo replaced and presumably the drain mod was done at the same time. I can see that if the turbo does not spin up for weeks then whatever the drain arrangement, a small amount of oil is likely to collect then get blown out when the turbo finally spins up. Am I right or should I be concerned?D1 300Tdi - gone

The point of the shorter pipe is so that the oil drains from the turbo directly into the block and therefore flows easily. With the longer pipe, it doesn't drain properly as there is too much back pressure caused by the longer pipe draining back into the sump. This causes oil seepage past the seals which in turn gets sucked into the intake when the turbo spools up.Kev

Also, I wouldn't assume you have the shorter pipe just because you had a turbo replaced.Kev

On a standard (non-modified) drain off arrangement, both pipes drain in to a collector within the sump. This collector is ventilated via a long tube that goes up about half way in to the block. The collector is designed for two purposes, one to allow the hotter oil from the turbo to cool slightly and the other is to prevent debris from a failed turbo being present in the main sump.
The collector is drained by a pipe (with strainer) going from the bottom and being drawn up to the vacuum pump, which discharges the oil in to the right cylinder head.
As for the (secondary) turbo not being used if you don't rev past 2800rpm, it has a vacuum control that will operate every 2mins to allow the turbo to spin up. You can hear this happen if you leave the engine to idle and notice a change in tone as the solenoid opens to spin the turbo.Joe

So is the issue a turbo seal related matter or nothing to worry about?
Mine does this when it has just been used for low speed running around and then you give it the beans!
It’s a 2013, presumably with the revised drain pipes from factory? With 140,000 miles.

My D4 now smoking more especially when foot down and engine revs go up to 3k. How long could a secondary turbo be expected to last as mine was replaced 2 and a bit years ago? Am I just unlucky? Is it possible to eyeball the turbo drain tube from above or below without being a contortionist to check if it's the long one or the replacement short one?
Oil level has dropped by two divisions since it was serviced 4 months ago. Suspect the smoking and oil level drop are related as the car has never drank a drop of oil between services before.D1 300Tdi - gone

Is fitting the shorter turbo drain tube a DIY job? What are the pitfalls?
Is the drain tube easily visible so I can check I still have the longer old drain tube fitted?

Think I'll give it a go once I've taken off the undertray to check that I do still have the longer old style drain tube. Only worry is removing the starter motor - can't find any discussion of removing a D4 one.D1 300Tdi - gone

I've now done the mod. Was easy peasy even lying on my back under the car on the driveway. Removing the starter motor was the hardest part, but even that not tricky once I'd worked out which pipes to unclip and get out of the way. I did it over two afternoons with just normal tools - 1/4 and 3/8 sockets sets, a few spanners, T30 torx bit - and best of all I had no bolts left over once everything was back together. First trip onto the bypass, HUGE plume of smoke - presumably just burning off what was left in the turbo and intercooler hoses. After that, nothing. What a relief.D1 300Tdi - gone

So thats why the tone changes, it sounds much deeper. Nice to know why at last.
Mine puffs some smoke on first time hard acceleration, I am on about the same milage as you are. The longer you pootle about the bigger the puff, so I just give it a blip every now and then when I pull away and it stays at a small amount.
No idea if it has had the turbo mod but as I dont drive it hard its not an issue. Where did you buy your modified pipe from?Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂
