Also wished to say if I may fantastic info , many thks , as I’m also going to fit an awning on the side
In the same boat as @Rogb , as I’ve only got the short rails
Wish to start off with an awning first and then get the sides etc later on , so got to make sure I pic a company that has the add ones , simply because I can’t afford it all in one go
will also be putting 2 x solar panels on the roof
Instead of cross bars plan to use some stainless steel L shaped lengths to mount the solar , then run the wires through the unused hole at the back of the roof

I think the ARB Touring 2.5 x 2.5 awning is worth having a closer look. It was my first choice for this kind of awnings back then.
I suggest you go to a shop or trade show and try to set it up ALONE - ideally with some little wind
ARB also has a useful quick release bracket but I haven‘t tested it myself.
For solar you need to start a new thread. That‘s gonna be a big discussion, too

I started with a Kamp-Rite ground tent with removed legs which I bolted to the roof with aluminium profiles.
I think that‘s the most compact and lightweight ‚roof top tent‘ on the market with 44lb and it was quite comfortable ... for a ground tent

What a great idea ref the trade show / shop, seeing I’m on my own would be ideal to see what there like before buying one
Started a solar thread a little while back, will update it when I start installing it , as indeed didn’t want to start talking about it in detail in ur thread

Before I decide on which awning I’m thinking ref getting for now a lightweight waterproof sun canopy , however is there such a system where on the vehicle it has like an awning type runner that’s fitted on top of the roof rail , that allows u to slide a sun canopy on plse
Thinking about the same type of runner that’s fitted to caravans where the awnings are slid on
Alas no system may exist but just thought then it would prevent a gap between a canopy and vehicle , so at least keeping the rain off
Searched for ages but Imagine I’m searching for the wrong thing
Also how does everyone get on please with height barriers when they have a box/ bag type canopy fitted and do u notice the weight when driving Plse

@gstuart: Foxwing and Batwing are not the same product. Foxwing was developed by Rhino and OZ together. Rhino then developed the Batwing by themself. It has integrated poles which was a drawback on the Foxwing. I don‘t know if the zippers are still the same.
