Auto Gear Box Fault and Repair |
|
Had the Disco in for Gearbox diagnostic it's got apparently a mechanical fault !!! When in drive mode it will eventually after say 60 or 70 miles go into F usually when on an incline when the gears are hunting around first happened in Switzerland in the longest tunnel in Europe !!! We made it through !
Will re set and drive fine again in manual mode if you avoid 6th gear for about another 60 or 70 miles will then eventually go into F.
Leave it half an hour and it will drive normally again but will go back through the cycle described above.
Quoted £2600 plus vat for a re build of the box ! We buy any car have offered £2800 for the car.
This is the Dilemma we love the car have covered 80 thousand miles in 4 years in it, it's a bit different it's a 2008 blue with full land rover body kit which makes it look very different and an immaculate cream interior.
Do I fix it ??? Looking around Autotrader etc values seem up, to buy a disco 4 with 100000 miles and XS spec (I have only just realised GS is no leather and no Cruise ?? Why ?) It's about 12 to 13 thousand pounds and that's a tough one some are up to £18000 and more for 2011/12 cars crazy.
If I add the cars value say after being chipped down by we buy any car to say £2500 and the fix at £2600 Iam in for 5k.
I can't see any Disco 3 for 5k with the spec of my car and say 177000 miles on.
It is a dilemma and these cars put you in it because when they are good they are so damn good at what they do.
We have travelled through Europe 6 or 7 up with no faults whatsoever.(other than the gear box but it didn't break down) Spain/Italy/France/Hungary/Slovenia/Germany/Austria/Switzerland/the Tyrol Winter and Summer relatively fast driving in Air conditioning safety and Luxury.
My Disco 3 died at 255 thousand miles it did all the same trips bought it in 2001 brand new went in 2008.
Is it worth fixing mine most other things on it are OK it's due a belt change and some low value jobs that total say £600
but everything even new cars need servicing so I can accept those costs just had full set of new Pirreli tyres she's drives lovely (except when she goes into F)
Iam waffling now !! Got a European trip coming up August/September so need to sort it or change it ? Would love a disco 4 but can't see what more Iam getting for the money would love any feedback on people who have gone 3 to 4 is it much better ????
Any ideas on a cheaper fix ?? My son mentioned buying a gear box from a breakers and getting that installed ?? Is that a possibility has anyone done it ?? Is it any cheaper than a re build ? Any advice on re builds has anyone had one done ? How did it go did you get good results??
Just struggling to say so long farewell Auf Wiedersehen goodbye !!! Throw it at me guys

From your story, if it was me it would be a no brainer to have the gearbox rebuilt. A second-hand box from a wrecker has no guarantee that it would not need overhauling after the short warranty runs out. Find a good gearbox repair specialist and get it done. I would add the torque convertor to it whilst it is out.

As above. You know the car, love car and importantly trust the car. The cost of the gear box repair would be less than the additional to purchase another without going through the trust process, which as we all know takes a while. The only guarantee you have with anything mechanical is that it will eventually break. To spend the additional on something newer at 10 years old with 100k on it, you need to want to know not only service history but maintenance history so you can weigh up likley issues round the corner.
Out of interest I was quoted 2k for gearbox overhaul and TC, but as with everything does cost outweigh trust.
Good luck with your dilemma.

Fix it, treat it like a classic and iconic car which it is, its only stuff that is going to wear out and theres not many brands that have so many options and specialists.
Of course there is a price to pay but that's always going to be motoring, how much to do all you've done on the bus or a coach even hiring an Uber!!!
If you can afford it fix it and continue to stand out from the crowd!

The price that places like We buy any car give are always low they only buy at a price they know they can sell on for a profit.
I was offered just under 6k for my 2005 se this week but turned it down as theres nothing i could buy that i would be happy with. I only payed 4k for it two and a half years ago but i bet if i checked we buy any car they would give me about £1500.
My car is worth more to me than 6k its all up together serviced twice a year and is a delight to drive, if i needed to spend £2600 on it i would without a second thought. Andrew

WBAC are buying stock for their own auctions. Subsequent buyer will pay fees, which gives WBAC a good return, any additional margin is a bonus. Chris

Just to let everyone on here know I did it !! I found an amazing guy in Liverpool who re built the auto box and fitted new TC, it is like a new car now amazing power and great economy.
We did South of France amazing 5 star Hotel inside Carcassonne Castle and down to Northern Spain Barcelona and home via Bordeaux and Normandy.
She ran like a dream 4 up with my 2 baby daughters 23 and 25 !!! Anything for a free holiday. Computer said we averaged around 32mpg not bad for a truck with nearly 200k on.
Now had the belts done and new compressor fitted in for about 4k with a £600 mot but honestly I can't currently see an alternative.
But I do like the Defender 130 sure we could fill that extra seat on one of our euro expeditions.
Thanks for all the positive comments Guys.
