Sporadic starting issue and system meltdown!!! |
|
Oh what fun...
Can anybody please help me??!! My Disco' 3 is being a t!t again.
First of all let me tell you what was done before this/these problem(s) began...
1) New battery
2) New front brake discs
3) Suspension height relay
4) Brake switch (that fixed our magical lowering and rising problems!!)
Now, what is happening is this. Sometimes the car will not start at all... Turn the key and no joy whatsoever, nothing!! At the same time the hazards come on!!
Sometimes the car does start and all seems ok for a bit then, as it drives along, the milometer goes blank (just little black lines running across the screen/module) and the main info screen just goes blank or shows the Land Rover logo. Also, the hazards come on. The performance of the engine itself is not affected but if you turn it off it will not turn back on again (unless it feels like it!)...
It's all very odd and it's all very frustrating...
When this first happened (just after we'd fitted a new battery) the garage we had taken it to (Keith Gott in Alton, very good indeed) said that the battery was almost dead!!! The battery was charged, a new brake switch was also fitted at this point and it was fine, for about 3 days, then it all started over again...
It's just another frustrating problem that I'd dearly love to sort out before I get a can of petrol and box of matches out!!!
If you can think of anything at all that may be causing this please let me know as I'm worried that these little, niggly bits can just amount to infinite labour costs that I just don't have.
Thank you so very much in advance guys, your help and expertise is always appreciated...

I had similar with our old D3... It was a fault with the main instrument cluster - if you search for "IPC" on here you'll find a few similar threads.
It was an easy enough fix: I found a working 2nd hand IPC on ebay, which I swapped myself in no time, then Flack came along and programmed the new IPC to the car. Crucially, when this is performed, you can only wind the digital mileage of the new IPC forward, so you MUST find a 2nd hand one that is of lower mileage than yours is currently showing (or live with the higher mileage shown on the replacement.)
I believe you can also get a brand new IPC from LR and have that programmed, however it was too rich for my blood.
There are also other stories of sending the IPC off to be fixed but I didn't have the time to be without the car.
Good luck! Cheers,
Gareth

As you have put in a new battery, did you check the alternator output, may not be charging it fully. +1 on the instrument cluster for the other faults.

You need to fill your vehicle details in, it will help members diagnose your issues.
Vehicles built from 2007 onwards suffer with dash issues after Fords changed to lead free solder which goes hard and brittle over time and can crack.
Pre 2007 vehicles dont suffer with this issue but the dash units can still fail. Andrew

Hello there...
Thanks for all your help and advice.
What is it about the IPC being on the blink that (potentially) causes these problems??
As I'm still pretty new to this machine I'm keen to see what causes these annoying problems and why!!
Many thanks to you all.

The solder cracks on the back of the board where the multi plug attaches usually at the top of the plug where there is most strain due to the routing of the wiring loom.
The top connectors are the canbus wiring which should be a complete circuit throughout the car, if you get a break in the system all the control units stop communicating with each other and throw up fault codes. Andrew

Hey Grifterkid, I’d put money on the cluster, I had it a few weeks ago, have a look at my post at the time
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/vehicle-failure-195417.html
Sent the cluster off for repair, came back, no issues since 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Thank you all so much...
So, it seems like the IPC is indeed the problem here.
The $64,000 question (or questions!) follows...
1) Do I buy a brand new IPC at huge expense?
2) Do I buy a used IPC for much less money but constantly worry that it's a ticking time bomb and only has a limited lifespan?
3) Do I see if the existing IPC can be brought back to life with some skilful soldering?
Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be great as this one is a right old pain in the sit-down!!

As far as I am aware you can have the IPC repaired as it is normally a joint failure internally Must stop buying shiny toys....

I used this guy
https://totaltronics.com/
Bit more expensive than some but sent a video of the testing, good comms and back within 36hours, all perfect since. The solder is a known issue so worth going for a repair first.
As you say beware around £600, if you buy a second hand replacement it has to be off a car with lesser mileage or your car will inherit its mileage (you can profane mileage of the cluster up to March Ece but not down) and you’ll be waiting for the same issue to happen to the replacement 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Think the mileage on the one I have for sale is around 70-80k... didn't work for me as my D3 at the time only had 18k on the clock I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I suppose that the condition of the IPC and all its componentry have more to do with where they've been rather than the mileage and age...
I'm going for a new one (limbs, retinas and organs for sale at reasonable rates!!) but even then, how can I be confident the solder isn't going to crumble within a week?!?!?!

Solder doesn't fail on a time basis. It fails on mechanical fatigue by either improper application (dry or under-wetted joint) or excessive mechanical stress. Either way, a new one should last as long as the old one did (plus or minus).
