Fan 2 woes
Hi all
Recently had a fan 2 control unit code come up
Caused overheating once and blew coolant breaking down second time overheating towing up hill in heat
Took local indie to repair. They replaced the fan. But I think with a modification where the fan boosts with acceleration rather than normal operation. It’s like overridden to speed up with revs. Which I am not keen on. Oh and the same codes still come up.
I really think I should repair the fault properly. But haven’t a clue where to start. And have had two bills this week so want to avoid returning for a third.
Is there anyone out there that can advise on what and where to look for please?

Fan 2 fault ? is there a fan 1 ??
I would imagine they have fitted a bolt to the viscus fan, locking it in fully (like you would get on an initial cold start up normally)
Or is this a second electrical fan, if so no idea how that would increase with engine revs.... unless it has been connected to alternator directly. Sounds dodgy either way to me.

Please see attached image of code and a image I was given explaining what to look for
It’s the viscous fan definitely that’s been replaced
I’ll remove it and get pictures see if a bolts been added
Just want it to work normally!
Thanks

With the engine off, key off, the fan should spin freely (i think im right in saying that - will double check mine when i tackle the hose from hell tomorrow ) I mostly fix bigger vehicle's with hydraulic fans or fully electric ones.

So in the engine bay fuse box is a red fuse, No. 10.
It's worth checking that and giving it a wiggle or replacing it, as that is easy.
Assuming you have working air con, when you press the ECO button the fan should change speed slightly (if Fan is actually working).
At the fan connector are 2 black/brown wires. You could check these are 12v with the ignition on. (pins A & E)
and the black is earth (pin B)

Pete do you mean the R10 big black one or F10 the small one please?
F10 has no fuse in
R10 is black box not red

F10 stick a 10A fuse in it then
Turn ignition on and off.
And check to ensure fuse hasn’t blown
Or it seams a 15A is an alternative

You on coiled suspension?
Is that why your air suspension relay and fuse is removed ?

Ok so I put 10a in f10 (emblem of engine with lightning through it)
Turned on engine and AC full blast
Also tried revving and still the fan increases with revs at 2-3000 revs
Turned off and checked fuse is fine
Is it not the f22 fuse with emblem of air in car? I’m on d3 2005
See image of diagram
Also:
No I’m on air. That’s an unrelated routine check I’m doing tonight to see if the height stays the same and no leaks

Yes. Thats the symbol.
If the mechanic has locked the fan, then the speed won’t change with air con
Check fan is plugged in. Clear fault codes. Start car for a minute or 2
Then check to see what fan fault codes the engine ecu has.
Maybe the mechanic who locked the fan removed the fuse? Worth asking him
Do you have the old fan ?
F22 is for high spec HSE models with rear air con

Can you confirm you mean yes f10 is the symbol please mate
And the fan is plugged in on the right side I can see it
I presume locked means a bolt tightened in to the fan? I was told this on the technical FB group.
If so I should next remove the fan and locate this bolt?
I will speak to them Monday but they were very vague. I’m fact I was told he didn’t know what was done to it. One of his staff did it and they were in such a rich couldnt tell me. Which was concerning.Disco 3 SE Manual 2005 V6 2.7

Yeap defo F10 with engine symbol.
I dunno how they would go about locking the fan.
1. Check with diagnostic tool what is going on
A Clear and read fault codes
B Read the vicious fan speed live value if you can, with engine running. Should be at least 200 rpm
2. I was thinking if you have the old fan, you could try fitting it. But if the mechanic recently removed THE FUSE, maybe no point

As you note, the fuse does not have a fan symbol, so maybe the
Mechanic was not cleaver enough to remove it.
