What to do?

Hi all,

After some advice/ideas please.

You may have seen my other post regarding a suspected turbo or manifold fault which will probably be a body off job to sort and a bit of cash. I'm guessing £3k with a view to being happy if it's less.

It's a 2012 Disco 4 XS with 200k on the clock. I've owned it for 5 years with a relatively easy life and no major issues.

If I get the body off and turbo replaced, I'll do the belts and whatever else whilst the body is off. This will naturally put the cost up but I should have peace of mind for a few years. (Hopefully!)

My other option is to sell as is and let someone else do the work and either make a profit or use it for themselves.

Any knowledgeable folk on here able to give me a ball park figure for what it might be worth as is?

I'd like to keep it, subject to cost of repair, but then it's the unknown of what next.

To top it all off, the wife's Vauxhall Antara brake lights have failed and it's nothing easy. (Bulbs, fuses, relays, switch, earth all seem fine). So we're car less and have had to rent one for the week until we can sort hers out.

Doesn't seem to be anything else on the market sub £12k that would fit the bill for a Disco replacement.

Arghhhhh!

Hi Moo,

I am swaying that way. I love the motor to bits. It's been cracking. A quick look on autotrader and I'm looking at £15k for a pickup which just isn't as good.

My only fear is what else might go pop after spending an est £3k on it. I suppose that could happen on any motor I bought though.

I paid £11k for her almost 5 years ago and got a loan for it. My man maths says she's only cost me £200 a month for 5 years of motoring which isn't bad at all. Cool

Don't suppose you know a rough guide price on timing belts and what else I should get done whilst the body is off do you?

A list of jobs worth considering if and when one has the body off:-

Front & Rear Belts
Front & Rear Tensioners plus Bolts (In the Kit)
Two Idlers Pulleys Plus Bolts (In the Kit)
Oil Pump Casing
Oil Seal for Crankshaft
Crankshaft Bolt
Consider replacing water pump - flush & replace coolant.
Inspect all brake pipes & replace rear brake lines - flush & replace brake fluid.
Front + rear upper arms
Consider changing intercooler hoses, particularly the 2 small ones with silicon
Turbo actuator rod
Check EPB cables
Autobox filter
Clean in-tank pump gauze
Carefully inspect the wiring for damage, and repair if required
Check rear air conditioning pipes
Check EGRs & turbo & turbo pipes
Check High Pressure Fuel Pump
Clean intercooler & radiator - consider replacing & upgrading intercooler
Check all suspension bushes & shims - takes around 60 seconds with the body off.
Check cross-over pipe at rear of the engine
Check prop shaft & universal joints
Wash chassis & underside of body, rub down and underseal any rust reapply Waxoil where necessary.
Remove the turbo, fit new modified actuator rod. Take out the studs and drill the threads out to 8mm. Use 2x M8 flange bolts to refit. This aids future turbo removal massively, and is also much quicker.
Check fuel injectors & glow plugs

By 100,000 miles expect to have done:-
Wishbones.
Steering tie rods.
ARB bushes.
Ball joints
Steering Column Universal Joints
Suspension bushes, you can get carried away with these. Most common are the rear uppers and front lowers. Body off makes no difference to front lowers, but the rear uppers are 5 minutes a side, as opposed to 2 hours with the body in place. A perfect excuse to upgrade to the RRS arms.
Check the exhaust system, it rarely gives any issues. But, a perfect excuse to consider replacement or upgrade.

Credit to D-M for most of the above

That's awesome. Thank you!

Been proper down in the dumps worrying about the motor and the cost. I think the wife is more upset than me! Got to be worth fixing and keeping for a few more years if possible. Can't afford a similar new (to me) motor. If I can get a few more years from her, I'll be happy.

Cheers for the info and advice. Thumbs Up
