To the assembled knowledge of the forum (again)
Have just bought as nice new Atera Strada bike carrier and hooked it up to the towing electric socket on the back of the Disco. Everything seems fine except for the reversing lights which don't work
Have checked fuses and am off to check bulbs. Any ideas guys?
Anyone know which socket pin is meant to control the reversing lights?
Now going armed with multi-meter to try....... Sail Fast - Live Slow...

Wiggs,
Big help
This means my voltmeter is working and that the car is wired correctly
However, only having towed a few times before, I've never paid much attention to the electrics.
Question, why is there no reversing light output on the 12N connector? Do caravans normally have a plug going to each socket to get around this?
Guess I'll either have to live with no reversing lights or re-wire a work-around, perhaps using 2 plugs into 1 loom......

Seriously,
In Australia, the black (12N) pins are:
1. Left-hand turn,
2. Reversing signal,
3. Earth return,
4. Right-hand turn,
5. Service (electric trailer) brakes,
6. Stop lamps,
7. Rear, clearance & side-marker lamps.
Therefore, the answer is - reversing lights illumination is available (pin 2). (with thanks to Drivesafe.)

For the UK, here are the 12N and 12S wiring details:
12N Wiring
Socket
Pin No. 7-core cable colour to Vehicle Circuit
1 Yellow to LH Flasher
2 Blue to Fog Lamp
3 White to Chassis earth
4 Green to RH Flasher
5 Brown to RH tail light
6 Red to Brake Lights
7 Black to LH tail light
12S Kits and Relays
General Instructions for Wiring 12S Socket to Vehicle (12 Volt Negative Earth)
7-core cable colour Connect to Socket terminal No.
Yellow Reversing light and catch 1
Blue Live feed aux battery 2
White Earth 3
Green Live feed interior lights* 4
Brown Sensing Device Spare 5

* On caravans post 1996 this feed is automatically switched during towing by a relay in the caravan to charge the caravan battery. When this happens, other interior circuits are off (except fridge).
hope this helps

As al said, unless the trailer/carrier also has the 12s connection then you will not get reversing lights.

Thanks guys,
I'll try to avoid reversing anywhere
Think I'll see if I can come up with a work-around whilst enjoying Islay's distilleries next week

You lucky !
I haven't sampled the islands produce - apart from Laphraoig (sp?). I love it, but can't afford it.

Only way for a work-around is to take a piece of 2 core wire from the trailer board to the cars 12s via a 12s plug. On the board connect one wire to the reversing light live connection, the other to an earth point. At the other end connect the live to pin 1 and the earth to pin 3, plug in the 12s and away you go.

But both the car and trailer board have 7 pin connections. Would be a big (and expensive) job to convert to 13 pin.

Sorry, but don't you have two 7-pin plugs? The black is 12N, while the white is 12S.
Or, once again, am I missing something here.
Best Wishes,
Peter
