Rear differential replacement - pinion bearing

I complained to my dealer about bearing noise somewhere. They diagnosed it with some sort of electronic stethescope, and said the rear pinion bearing is shot, and they will replace the rear differential to fix the problem, which will take 2 days in the workshop to fix.
I am interested in advice:
a) is pinion bearing failure a common thing, or I'm just unlucky? (car's done 73,000km); and
b) does it make sense that they're changing the entire differential? Not that I am complaining, but wouldn't you just replace the 2? pinion bearings?
Here's some interesting imagines of the offending part: http://www.cutawaycreations.com/cutaways.p...fferential

I think you will find that the noise is due to about half the dif casing being missing. Whistle

If I had any part breaking up in the diff, it'd be best to swap it all out complete. Besides, LR will probably only pay for a complete unit swap rather than the labour required to break it all down and put it back together component by component.

Thanks Bodsy, I have suspected that from LR's perspective its more economical to replace, rather than dissasemble/reassemble. So does that mean the whole diff unit, like the object shown in the linked picture?

Also, I have been told that all warranty replacement parts have to go back to the factory for inspection. I wonder what happens to all of the pieces that are not damaged (eg, the housing etc). For somebody with (say) a cracked housing, it would be a valuable spare.
