Yep, Vac Pump oil seal fails, and although could in theory be replaced, the oil itself contaminates the vac pump, and servo, and brake fluid. All needs replacing

Only the other day we drilled through an old Olive grove, that obviously at some time millions of years ago had some herbs growing in among the trees. Drilled into it and Hey Pesto ...................................struck oil. Club Pie n Pea

Have just checked mine. Oily - thanks for the heads-up!
Would this contamination explain my "brake pedal slowly travels to the floor" issue that randomly happens?
I wonder if this is a common fault that many don't realise they have as it's so invisible. My own brake performance has deteriorated slowly since I've had the car, but it was gradual enough for me to think it was all in my mind.
Perhaps a forum front page warning like the old "Check your tailgate struts" is in order?
My ever enquiring mind has a question (sorry!).
The vacuum pump draws air from the servo right? And the servo uses that vacuum to assist the braking force, with the vacuum being diluted by atmospheric pressure air when the pedal is released, right? So if the air 'flow' is always from the servo to the pump, how does the oil make it's way in the opposite direction? If it was clean oil I could imagine that the combination of vacuum and heat causes some of the lighter fractions of oil to evaporate/condense in the pipes over time, but in my case it's carbon laden. Does it really just make it's way up the pipe by capillary action? Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."

One for TFC or Steve Norman to explain perhaps? Like the idea of making this warning/check a sticky I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Thats a quote TFC gave me, 5hrs for a dealership .
When Iain did my service, I asked him to take particular attention to the pads, as I have complained bout the stopping power, and so did the MOT station. Its ok on carriageways, motorways etc, but in town the pedal seems spongey, and goes quite down before you get braking. With that info he did'nt bother with checking pads and just whipped off the pipe and said thats the problem.
He knows his stuff, and my dealers had NO avenue to back up

I wonder if TFC does this, and what his price might be, and if mine has gone (got same spongy brake symptoms ) does anyone know if Tesco Finest Warranty will cover it I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Well I would'nt know on both counts there, I am sure TFC could do it, but would he , and as for Tesco warrenty, keep us posted on that cos I am going onto that as of the 19th when my LR warrenty runs out. Mine was just in time to fail
It is a big involved job though, Vac Pac is on the rear of the engine, and servo needs to come out, and brake fluid replaced.

It's on the list of items covered and I had no problem with Tesco.

When my brakes first failed in March, I looked around and could not find very much info on this. Had the servo replaced under warranty. car back in again this week to have the servo replaced with an "upgraded part" that has now become available and the master cylinder replaced as well this time.
As previous replies, this one sneaks up on you. I had the fortune of not having anyone in front of me at the traffic lights when I pressed hard on the pedal to stop as they changed in front of me, and found my foot hard to the floor and still doing 20MPH (frrom 60) as I sailed through onto the roundabout.
Now, lots of other people seem to be having the same proble, perhaps it's a case of the Swine leaving their virus behind in the mud and it being picked up in the brakes of the cars as they go offroad? H1N1 becomes H1D3? 11 HSE Santorini Black

I think this should be a re-call by LR. Safety issue. If out of warranty I would try to get LR to pay for it. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
