I guess the loading on the strut lends itself to "unscrewing" the RH mount, whereas it tries to tighten the left. Sounds as though a drop of thread locker on the RH one is a worthwhile precaution for all.

mmm gonna recheck mine again... right hand one did appear to be about a 1mm away from the metal... LH was tight up against it.

In an ideal world there should be exactly the same amount of force on both struts in both directions assuming you open and close the tailgate the same number of times (I wondered what the draught was...) but I would imagine that the opening motion has a bit more energy in it as the tailgate hits the stops? Is there a physicist in the house? Or failing that, a psychic?

It's OK, I have it on good authority that LR have addressed the issue.
They are including a 13mm spanner in all tool kits from this week...

Martin - it's worth reiterating what AndrewS says on page 1 of this thread: when checking, lift the tailgate to take the weight off the struts. That way it's really obvious if the nut is only hand-tight.

Just checked mine…..all okay…..phew....
The RH one just needed a slight squeeze with a spanner to snug it up tight. The LH is perfect.

One thought I had, if anyone has a broken nut on their car, rather than going through the horrendous chopping & patching that seems to be involved in the “official” fix. I wonder if you could use a “rivet nut” ??
I’ve seen a mate of mine use these & I think they’re quite trendy. I would assume anyone working with sheet metal or fabrication would be familiar with them.
Basically they are a brass threaded insert, which in the example I saw, was put into a 9mm hole which was drilled into a piece of channel. Then a tool very similar to a rivet gun was used to fix the insert into the hole. It expands in the hole much the same way as a regular rivet & will not come out again. So once that’s done you have a thread to tighten in a bolt & secure whatever you’re fixing, in this case the strut.
I thought it was a very froody little thing I wonder if it would work in this case. I’m sure they come in various sizes to suit your application.
Sure would be better than chopping a hole in the pillar & patching it up again…
