Oh the joys of upper tailgate not working
Well after my upper tailgate failed to open over the weekend , boot rammed full of heavy tools aswell .
I had to load up the back seats with a load of other stuff for a job today .
Proceded to remove it all ,via the back doors , not a fun job. Got the trim apart , got my hand in and pulled the cable . Tailgate popped open . I then removed all the trim properly and found the end of the cable had snapped
This is what it should look like
Not wanting to have to go through that again , i decided to make myself an emergency realease .
Joined a cable tie to the new cable .
Made sure it didnt foul anything and that the actuator was working ok . Put the cover back on
Recovered the hole were the original foam was ( destroyed while trying to get the cable to pull while locked )
Problem I had now is were to put the end so that it would be easy accesable and not get caught on anything ..not much choice so i made a slit in the tailgate trim ..looks worse than it is ..with the cable tie removed you cant see the hole .
Tested a few times , and made sure it wasent fouling the actator ...all ok so taped it down .
Then put my Hatchbag cover back on
Hopefully it wont ever go again , but if it does i wont have to do all that removal again .
New part £16 plus vat . I can now get all my stuff loaded up for Ireland on WednesdayG4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Hi Wiggs, lads,
I am trying to to the same mod but for a more regular use as we sleep in the D. (not every night , just camping or while overlanding )
So I did try this mod but it seem the cable tie is pulling the cable towards the inside of the boot whereas the actuator normaly is having it to slide from side to side / left to right (if you have the part in front of you you'll know whacha 'm talkin' 'bout*
Has anyone done a serious mod up to the point of having a inside door latch fitted ?
ok I know i could you the key to set it to pop it up, but in case of an emergency a proper set up could be a serious bonus

Sorry if this may be a stupid question but there is no reference of where other end of the cable (ie NOT the hook acuator end) is connected to.
Theres no mention on any of links on what it atteches to so I take its quite simple to identify where the other end goes
Planning to undertake this mission on friday... Day off - woo!!!

yes, very easy, the solenoid is only held on by a coupleof bolts. The only hard bit is opening the tailgate in the first place, there are a few other guides as well, try this one
also look at Chocolademans signature (in above thread), there is a link to his guideJoined the BMWX5 45e group

Im going for a proper fix by myself.
Just sent the Mrs off to get the part £27 inc vat.
Must admit, I couldnt get the rigid cover board off last night with two butter knives, but then again it was late, dark and I was long a few stellas...
Mine went whilst camping just unloaded the boot and went back to put odds and ends away and ..... To make matters worse defender guys came over to complement me on the reliability of the D3 Packing the boot was fun on the last day, anyway got home tried to strip down but could not release actuator so local Indi did it under warranty £140 ish but got it back now good as new but alway weary incase it goes again

I ended up using a couple of quite sturdy screwdrivers, get it around the area it changes height, and I found just as I thought I was going to break it, it came away. It won't come very far, just enough to let you get your hand down there, I still have the scars to prove I did mine. Its then a case of using the photos everyone has provided and guess at the right bit, if you are pulling the cable then thats the wrong bit!Joined the BMWX5 45e group
