Suspension Lift with Coilover LR3's? |
|
I have a non-air suspsension LR3 with coil over springs and gas shocks at all four corners.
I am interested in lifting this truck anywhere between 2 and 4 inches, and I need some ideas and advice.
I have heard that a body lift is pretty easy, there are ten mounting points, and a 2" lift probably will not effect anything, including the steering column.
I would like to increase the suspension travel (droop/articulation) from stock, and wonder what spring/shock combinations work best....
I have also heard that any change in ride height will dramatically weaken my CV joints and that I would be foolish to pursure this further.
Questions:
1. Has any one lifted a coilover LR3 or similar vehicle with independant suspension?
2. Are the CV's that susceptable?
4. Would a body only lift be of any benefit in off roading?
Regards,
NW

Hi NW,
Well there are a couple of things to answer here.
First, The LR3 is so new I don't think anyone has had the nerve to customise it yet.
Having said that Kevin Baldwin, a writer in Land Rover World Magazine, wrote lastyear that the LR3/D3 was just begging for a 3" body lift and some big tyres. (when I can find the article I will pm you the exact quote as it spoke about puting the lift between the two chassis!!)
I would imagine that in a couple of years most LR3/D3 coiler will have had at least an OME lift kit fitted. I would but the wife wants one of them fancy new fangled air suspension things I think it's called the S+
I do not know the expertise of the other members of Disco3.co.uk so I would point you in the direction of Ho Chung at Discoweb or expedition exchange, He tells me his LR3 is staying standard at the moment becasuse it kicks *** (his words not mine) regards

Thanks for your reply Tony. I brought my truck up to Ho and John last week, and they advised against any sort of lift due to potential problems with putting an exponentially higher strain on the CV joints.
At the same time, a mechanic at my LR dealer who is building a Baja 1000 race truck LR3 said that it would be no problem. So I have two radically divergent opinions from knowledgable people....

Give me some time to find the article. It was about putting distance between the two(!) chassis. regards

there is no such thing as an LR3 in America without air suspension. How do you have Coils?

Mr. Macburns, there are exactly 25 of the base model V6 coilover equipped 5 seater LR3's here in the US. I have one of them.

I'm going to try this again, as this thread went into a circle.
I need help from someone in the UK or Australia I think, or anywhere where the coil spring version of the Disco III is sold.
In your area, have any 4x4 shops performed a suspension lift on this vehicle yet? If so, please please please put me in touch with them!
I have tried contacting ARB and they are non responsive. I have tried LandRover North America and they are appoligetically unhelpful.
I can't be the only guy in the known world who would and extra inch or two...under my wheels!
Regards,
NW

I'm not aware of anyone lifting a coiler D3 in the UK, there's not many of them about as only the very base model has coils. The End

nwoods, an air suspension D3 has the "off road" setting which lifts the body up a few inches. I guess the vehicle (inc. propshafts) will have been designed to operate in that uplifted mode. Suggest you ask your dealer whether there are any significant part differences between the coil and airsprung versions (other than the suspension and terrain response gizmo's themselves) to get a sense of whether the coiler can be mechanically raised to the same height as the air sprung off road level. From memory I suspect the offroad height in the air sprung model may not allow driving speeds above a certain level, might be worth checking that out too. Disco 4 TDV6HSE

You get a warning above 35km/h then if you hit 40 km/h the suspension automatically returns to 'normal' height. This is the same whether using access height or extended mode. Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue

Sadly, my dealer is of little help. There are only a handful of these in the US, mistakenly at that. There is insufficient documenation and support here locally to ask detailed technical questions like that.
For example, this vehicle has been recalled due to the fitting of a scissor jack when it is supposed to have a bottle jack (in reading the UK recall announcment), but my dealer is unable to confirm it, and is unclear on what the recall is for, or what to do. Thus I still have the scissor jack until they sort it out internally. I am not holding my breathe!
