Aux. power outlet in luggage dept. of car

Hi everyone,

(on the risk of this question having been asked before , but my searches didn't show up any relevant posts) I have recently bought a 2006 D3 HSE TDV6. The car has originally been deliverd in Germany but was driven to the Netherlands immediately after it left the dealer's. It has been fitted with the tow pack, incl. all electric wiring / plug.

In the boot section of the car there is no aux. power outlet (sigar lighter type). It has the cut-out but a blind cover has been installed. I do need a power outlet but somehow my local dealer feels he needs to charge me a fortune to install this. I now want to find out if this is something I can do myself.

Does anyone have the correct LR partnumber for the outlet and fitting instructions to go with it? There are a lot of cables directly behind the panel where the outlet will be installed but finding the correct wire / plug is the real challenge of course...

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome P Thumbs Up

If you open the panel where the looms are for the tow pack etc, have a feel around and you should find a connector tied back on the loom with some soft grey foam on it - the two pin holes will be in an 'L' shape - I think its orange in colour?

The 12v socket and cover will cost very little and its only a matter of plug and play. Your local dealer should be able to supply the part.

Have a look and see if its there - just a matter of popping out the blanking plate and inserting the socket - 5 min job.

Good luck

@ Tanters:

Thanks for your prompt reply. Very Happy

I have not got my D3 with me at present. I'm on a project in Amsterdam centre right now and taking the car to work means facing the National Traffic Jam each morning and evening. Reason why I take the train. When I get home tonight I will look for the L-shaped connector in grey foam right away.

If it's as simple as you make it sound then I have some nice thoughts for the local dealer..... Censored

Thanks again. Thumbs Up

PS: Did you learn by trail/error or do you have acces to the electrical diagrams, workshop manuals or such?

Hallo Pauleline,

I have also installed a power outlet in the back, I just went to a normal car parts store and bought one. It is a standard size.
As I wanted a second battery for the fridge etc. I pulled a cable from the front to the rear and connected it with that.
The bracket for the second battery (UK side) was only 3,50 euro including the long bolts.
I have currently a manual switch between the batteries as the spare Warn relais didn't like to be powered for more than an hour.

Update

I had a look (and feel) behind the panels yesterday evening and in the end found the plug I was looking for. It was indeed in grey foam and taped back to the loom. However it was tucked between two covers and hard to locate, but: Tanters had is spot on! Orange with L-shaped position of connectors, black and purple wires.

I will order the part at my local dealer or mayby go for a universal one at Halfords c.s. Mission accomplished.

Thanks to all for helping me out! Thumbs Up

pauleline, go for the proper LR one, it's only about £5 (probably €7 given that they're not adjusting prices on exchange rate too much)

It will look much better than an aftermarket one (I've had aftermarket & replaced with a LR one later)

Just to wrap things up:

I got an original LR socket and installation was a 2 minutes job. Looks perfect and also provides just what I need. It is swithed by the way, so only power when key in position 1.

Thanks again for all the help! Thumbs Up
