Chris,

I was able to zoom right in on the photo's that Kaymar emailed to me. The 'plate' that you can see is just the splash guard from around where the spare used to sit.

And, having changed a tyre in a suit, it would be much better to have the spare rear mounted than in it's present position. Its easier to keep dirt off oneself when lifting a wheel whilst standing, than it is to keep dirt of onesself when crawling under the back of car (which is necessary to detach the spare from the winch cable)

Although, I must admit that I carry a set of overalls in the car now and slip of my jacket and put on the overalls if I need to get dirty. Very Happy

I'll have a closer look at that next time!. But in any event, I remember having to get down on the ground to drag the spare rearward.

But for me, when go on trips, I like to carry two spares and having an aux fuel tank will come in handy. There are some big stretches between fuel stops out here. I'd like to do the Canning Stock Route!

There's also a risk of staking an underslung spare in some of the places I want to go. Horses for courses!

Of course don't forget to unload the contents of the rear just to get at the unwinding mechanism. Too bad if you have installed a drawer system or storage boxes. Just the sort of thing to be doing on a hot day in the bush when you are already preoccupied with the remaining fuel in your 85 litre tank. Sad

so how much fuel will evaporate whilst your bespoke wind / unwind motor on the spare wheel carrier 'does it's thing' - or haven't you got that far?

Hello 10,

It's a point for us that there are some places that we'd like to go here that are too far bewteen fuel stops.

One 4WD expert recommends 250l of diesel be carried to do the Canning Stock Route (or 350l of petrol!). And that winch thing is a bit of a Censored being mounted where it is.

As I said, Horses for Courses!.

I'm coming over to the UK in about 18months and am looking forward to finding some greenlanes!

18 months may be too late, at the rate they're going some idiot in his 'wisdom' will have persuaded the rest of his idiot mates that they should all be closed. Problem is said idiots run our country and think it's more important to spend their time and our money on such things to please a vocal minority than to work on things like improving our health care, public transport, pensions, immigration issues, crime rates etc. Evil or Very Mad

Anyway what I think you're saying is that the disco3 is not up to your standards because of the points discussed thus far in this thread. Can I ask how many 4x4's have a double spare set up and additional fuel tanks as standard kit in Aus ?
