Brake upgrades for Base model D3

I can't give any specifics because I did not perform the work, but the HSE's larger front disk brakes can be installed fairly easily with no modification required to a Base model Disco3.

The brake pads and calipers are the same, only the rotors are swapped out. The HSE's are atleast an 1" bigger in diameter. The rear brakes are the same.

I had it done to mine, and yes, there is a noticable improvement in stopping power.

I did not NEED to have this done, but the opportunity arose and so there we are.

Surely it would require new caliper brackets or something to stop the larger discs fouling the calipers. Also, surely the braking force will be the same as before. Same pads clamping same distance from disc centre = same force.

I'm with you Simon, that doesn't make any sense. Confused Confused

I went the whole hog and upgraded to the Brembos from the Supercharged RRS, now they really do have stopping power Smile

do you have to fit the 19 inchers to fit the Brembos. was it the rotors and calipers you replaced or just the calipers

I replaced the rotors and calipers, huge they are too. Yes, they won't fit on anything smaller than 19" wheels.
Mine's an RRS HSE, so that wasn't a problem.
I occasionally felt that the standard brakes suffered from a little fade, hence the upgrade, but they also look seriously cool as well 8)

Why, the rotor is the cheaper of the two items and is a doddle to fit. If you are going to the expense of replacing the calipers, it would be foolish not to also replace the rotors.

its a pity because you couldnt just fit stronger callipers for an 18" wheel but have to replace the rotor aswell or can you do a calliper swap? I dont want 19" I like it just the way it looks

You possible could just replace the calipers, but it is the calipers themselves that dictates the minimum wheel size. And in the case of the Brembos, that is 19".

Having been used to owning performance cars fitted with AP Racing brakes, I struggle with "normal" braking systems. The HSE is O.K, but I'd like brakes with more reassurance.
Paul, did you fit the Brembo's to the front only, what was the cost?
Thanks, LT.

I'm with you on that one LT.
I had just come from an Audi RS4 and an RS6 before that when I bought the RRS. Both of which had superb brakes.
I was fortunate that I was able to pick up the Brembos and rotors off eBay for a total of £200. The only missing items were the larger back-plates, which I bought from JE Engineering (everything is original LR items).
Having installed the Brembos, I'm very happy with the braking now.
I have only installed the larger front brakes, the rears are perfectly adequate.

Thanks Paul, what a "result" for £200 Smile
The only(minor) reservations I have for the D3 are if performance brakes will cope with off-road conditions(should be o.k) and the fact that I couldn't fit smaller wheels for off-roading.
