Alternator replacement guide (please)

Just a quick question addressed to any of you who have changed a D3 alternator yourself.

Do you have any tips for the easiest way to get at it?
How much gubbins you need to remove first?
Are there any special tool needed?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Getting the fan off is the tricky part. With a set of viscous fan spanners its easy.
From the top of my head;
- Firstly remove the to fan cover and coolant hose. Put a towel in the hole to prevent anything falling down.
- Remove the fan.
- Use an allan key to move and"untension" the belt tensioner und pull the belt off while holding the tensioner down.
- Undo the cable plug on the alternator.
- Undo the (3?) screws on the alternator. The one on the far left side is the tricky one.

Believe this is it but might have forgotten something. You can get the fan of with a (27 i believe) spanner and a large screw driver to block/clamp the fan behind the screws. But its a bitch......

Cheers for that, bit more confident now.
It looks a bit daunting at first, mainly due to the lack of access, but I guess the old principle of "someone put it together so it will come apart" prevails. (Even if it was put together before the body went on) Whistle

fan is a 36mm, spanner can be had from halfords but if it's anything like mine you would need a proper locking tool for the waterpump pulley as mine was impossible to get off - ended up getting a local indy to do it.

If you can get the fan off, the rest of it looks very easy and there isn't much to getting it out.

Thanks, that's kinda what I was hoping to hear. I'm not too phased about getting the fan off, had the Def'ner apart a few times, it was getting access to the alternator itself I was bothered about.

I'll have to see if my home-made Td5 locking tool fits the D3 fan pulley, shouldn't be too hard to modify it if not.

I had a lot of trouble removing the fan so i had to make a tool to remove it. Also if you have a second battery make sure you unplug it!

Just changed mine today, 2005 D3 with 67000 miles, paid £155+VAT (£186) for an exchange unit. Its taken me about 4 hours to fit mainly because I could not get the viscous fan off, ended up pulling it out of the drivers side wheel arch. Neutral

2007 HSE TDV6 alternator failure

Mine went last week - a smell of electrical burning and a stream of smoke rising from the alternator just as I pulled onto the drive at home luckily enough. Just before that all the warning lights came on and the sat nav screen went off. Battery voltage when the engine was turned off was 4.5V!! Disconnected the battery immediately!! Replacement alternator was £200+VAT - only done 45,000 miles from new. Replacement was easy enough after I made a fan pulley wheel tool out of a flattened piece of 22mm copper pipe, which was the hardest part of the job. After installation, voltage with engine running and no accessories on was 14.5V and all the warning lights were off thank goodness. Battery is holding it's charge too, I'm glad I disconnected it and recharged it straight away!! I'll keep that tool - I've a feeling I'll be needing it again! I told the parts dealer I was disappointed that the alternator had gone after only 45,000 miles and he said that's nothing compared to when a brand new vehicle comes back after 2 days with the same problem like he had seen previously.....yikes!!! Big thanks to all the previous contributors for their advice on how to replace it!!!!!
