Ok - crank differences aside, time to bring you all up to date.
Local indy thought it could be injector(s) so changed a couple - same
Next thought is it could be timing has jumped (belts were changed on schedule at 105K miles or 160K) That is being investigated at the mo.
If not that he is going to pull the head and take a look inside.
I will keep the board informed.
Cheers for all the input,
Matt

Hi muddymatt,
Thanks for the update.
With luck, it will be the timing belt.
Best of luck,

Another update..........
The garage who has it is 90% sure the timing has jumped somehow and a piston has collected a valve on middle cyl on left bank. It has 60% less compression than the other 5.
The 10% doubt comes from the facts the noise seems to be from the right bank and the belts were all still tight and showed no signs of damage or reason to have jumped. Belts were done my main dealer and indy called him last thing Friday and ruined his weekend.
They are gonna talk more on Monday and it looks like the head is gonna get pulled to see whats going on.
I'll keep the board informed as always...........
Cheers,
Matt

Hi again Muddymatt,
It's beginning to sound like the dealer stuffed the belt change. I hope that they accept that & repaiir under warranty.
Best of Luck,

Yeah unlikely to happen after 30,000K and a year. Dealer called me Monday and is adamant belts were changed correctly, locking pins used etc etc.....
Indy is equally adamant it was a tooth out on the crank and the starter had never been out before. (you ned to remove starter to access the crank timing hole) Also if dealer used pins as per manual why was there twink (tip-ex) on the cam pulleys?
Anyway head is being pulled soon so we will see what damage has been done.

Make sure the indie has taken a lot of photos. Write to the dealer stating what advice you have and what there response was. When you spoke to them you gave them the oportunity to fix it. You need to confirm their rejection of that opportunity.
If you really believe the dealer to be at fault then you need to reduce their wriggle room. I would inform LR of the situation and the response from the dealer. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Right - lots more news and none of it good.............
The heads were pulled and witness marks found on most of the pistons where the valves had been kissing the top of the pistons. Also the seats were checked at the machine shop and found to have some degree of ovality which would account for the low compresion readings obtained during the earlier testing.
When RH head was pulled the middle piston had LOTS of float so the remains of the motor were pulled and the sump taken off.
It has spun a bearing and munted crank and rod.
I do have some pics to upload when I get a chance.
This is on a 195000K full service history D3. Always had the oil changed early and good quality 5w30 used. To say I'm piXXed off would be a understatement!
I have very few options. There is a second hand motor available but it is over $7500 without fitting. Thats over 3500 grand in uk money.
Are short motors available ex factory yet? Or even a crank and rod set? I can get the heads fixed and replaced here and that might be the best option.
Any thoughts as to what might have caused this too? I will be blocking off the dreaded EGR while it's apart as I hate the idea of an engine eating it's own waste.
Sadly gone are the days when you went down to the motor factors and bought a pile of pistons and shells and bolted it all together!
Good luck, and that's putting it mildly!
Oh and DiscoStu as someone who has worked in Tunisia and promised myself I'd go back and look at it again I watched your videos with interest!
Before buying the Disco 3 I bought an old (1995) P38 DSE Auto and was seriously thinking of going on a trip with that, but the total lack of grunt even with a psi powerbox made me shelve that idea, but now I have the 3 I'm sort of making planes to go to Tunisia and then onwards to Jordan via Libya and Egypt, where I have a mate working and he has a Disco 2!
Will I get round to doing it, yes if I can find some mug to keep me company!

Hi MM,
Ouch! That's horrible news.
I'm sorry, but unable to help with replacements info.
I really appreciate your taking the time to provide updates,

£3500 is a lot of money for a second hand engine. I appreciate you are downm under, but recently fitted a D3 engine, and the guy paid £1700 for it, delivered IIRC.
Sure a short block (complete bottom end) was about £2k...My D3 Build Thread

Ok - update time.
Good news first. My baby is back and going well.
New ex-uk short motor, rebuilt heads new timing belts etc.....
I have put a claim complaint to the main stealer who did the timing belt at 160K and put it a tooth out. I'm not gonna name and shame them yet as they have the chance to come good, do the right thing and pay.
The independant will back me and I have spoken to the Motor Trade Assocaition and my case looks good if I do need to take it further.
The legal dept of the dealer has responded and told me the service manager is on hols till the 24th.
I will report more to the board when I have news.
Cheers.

My symptoms were exactly the same as yours, even down to the music
The shells start to pick-up, causing the damage seen. As it gets hotter bits start to break off, reach the oil pump which seizes, then the crank seizes and breaks. I think you'll find your crank isn't broken, just 'picked up'.
I've seen worse;;;;

Seen worse than that too, but no pics
Excuse my ignorance, but as a non engineer, looking at the photo, the non-machined bits of the crank look a bit, how should I say.......random. How on earth does the thing balance without vibrating like mad?

cranks are balanced before they are fitted anyhow, you can see the holes drilled in the web on the picture above. The 'random' bits arent that random realy
I had a Dihatsu 2.8 lock up solid on one big end for no reason I ould find, I had the crank ground and fitted over size shells.
Anyone know the reason why you cant buy shells and new cranks etc? Seems a bit strange. Do LR take bottom ends back and recondition them or are they just scrap if the crank goes?
When people say remove the body are we tallking about the wings and bonnet or something a bit more major?

AFAIK, Land Rover dont sell shells etc seperate, only a short block (complete bottom end)
We had an engine do the same, but cant get shells anywhere, genuine, or aftermarket. Even went to an engine specialist who said they could regrind the crank, but couldnt get any shells to match
