Turbo failure

Has anyone else had the turbo fail on their disco 3? 54 plate 65000.
The engine would run fine in boost for first few minutes then would revert to being a normally aspirated slug. It took me a while to get turbo off but it revealed a tiny crack in wastegate pivot which was enough to stop wastegate sealing off, consequently loosing boost until switched off and cooled down where the crack would close up.

Dealer says they've never seen this before? I think they maybe telling porkies as they had the new turbo unit in stock.

Not heard of this fault at all on this forum. ALL faulty Turbo's on here, including mine, are of a Variable Vane pack failure....Its a known fault on the D3, so to have a cracked one is probably news to the dealers

Plenty, just search for Turbo! Usually the variable vanes get stuck. Later vehicles have a software change that excercises the vanes at each engine cycle.

I always find myself taking everything dealer says with pinch of salt. I have become cynical. It's running better now than ever though. I installed the autologic power upgrade on it to really boost it up. Make that new turbo work for it's money now

When my Vane Pack on the Turbo failed, I was told by the fitter it was because the D3 was'nt driven with urgency. He gave me the advice of at least once Every journey give it a booting, thus allowing the vanes to fully exercise and loosen any soot deposits that clog the vanes and fail the units.

Works for me

Fair enough to me also! My mrs drives it most of the time like driving miss daisy so when I get in it and clear the pipes it sings a much happier tune. Trouble is with a big diesel there is no getting round carbon build up totally. When
I replaced egr valves it was due to carbon deposit that they had failed. Need an additive of sorts to be added to tank at every other cycle like Peugeot diesels to with dpf system. Just getting the system that bit hotter and leaner really keeps it a lot cleaner inside.
