Suspension Compressor / Suspension error
The story of me my Disco 3 S and the bunch of new-part-fitters that Landrover employ as technical staff.
Well it started with error message on the console that state “Suspension error only normal height availableâ€. This message is accompanied by the normal bell sound and an orange colour light ob the bottom left side of the console. This message will appear after about 3 to 5 minutes after I started the Disco and I could hear the compressor running. After the message appear the compressor will stop.

Well I went to our Landrover dealer for a service and they came with a reply that they need to replace the compressor. The cost close to Eight thousand Rand (±£800). Well I asked if one can not repair the compressor and was turned down with a short no, it is impossible to repair. Well with that there was a few other problems that mounted to a very high quote to repair my Disco………
Well to make a long story short I did not have the money to do it and decided to investigate it further.
After searching the Disco 3 site I came to a few problems on the compressor and with one guy (From the US if I can remember ) that said there is a repair kit available for the repair of the compressor. A friend of mine inquired for me at the Landrover agency and sourced a repair kit (the kit comprises out of a o-ring a spring and a rubber out let valve) and the air drier kit for the compressor. (The spares guy suggested that I should change it as well). Well I bought it for R1200 and this weekend I got the opportunity to remove the compressor and rebuild it. Well it was a success and now my Disco is running again with no problem and no error message.
For those that want to know what the compressor look like and would like to know how to rebuild it here is a step by step photo record.
The first few pictures is just to show what it the compressor looks like:
I washed the compressor with water and a brush (I assumed it to be water tight if it is mounted under the Disco. Make sure that the water does not go into the open pipe ports on the compressor and drier)
The Philips screw on the drier needs to be removed then you can turn the Air drier anti clock wise to release it from the compressor. It is hooking on two small lips on the compressor outlet.
This is what the Air drier looks like when removed.
I then removed the sheath around the electrical wires to free up some working space.
Because I did not know what the compressor looked like inside I removed the Compressor head by undoing the four screws on the top
Remove the 17mm bolt that you can see on the head of the compressor
Be careful rather use a 17mm socket for this bolt is made out of Aluminium and is soft the spanner I used left some marks
The new spares
I removed all the build up on the inlet valve (the stainless steel shim) and the head by using a Stanly blade and a small buffing cloth wheel on the drill.
Then I assembled the whole lot.
As you can see the screws keeping the head in place is of the self tapping type. To screw them back you have to turn them slowly to the “loose†direction with some pressure applied to it until you feel a small nock. Then you know you are at the start of the thread and can screw them in.. Don’t over tighten it.
For those that would like to know what the drier looks like in the inside (like me ) the following pictures show a bit.
The drier is filled with silica jell balls so if you open it be careful otherwise it is all over your work place.
In my case the silica jell started to make damp balls and I could not blow air through the drier. I think one will be able to rebuild it by just putting new silica jell into the holder. I might have been enough just to replace the drier. So in future if they tell you some thing can not be repaired…… Well think again you might be able to repair it your self.
I hope this will help somebody in the future.

If it possible to point for us the actual parts and kits we need, and point us to the sources you get it from.
I am not going to wait until the compressor will die, I will purchase the kits now.
Thanks.

Great post, but I have a few questions.
I purchased the same overhaul kit from the dealers and i plan to replace a dryer and some of the O rings. What is it , that you replaced with a 17 mm spanner, is it a valve block? Now i know what that little spring and o ring goes to , but a kit contains a few more items such as a bigger , thicker spring and big O ring and plastic ring . Does anybody know, where all the remaining parts should go to?
Thank you
