Temp Gauge

Bit of an odd problem, so here goes.

From cold the car warms up normally. Park up for ten, fifteen minutes until it just starts to cool a little. Start up, the temp gauge shows just below normal. Suddenly the needle drops off the bottom of the gauge and the engine starts to rev at around the 1400/1500 rpm mark.

At this stage if you ‘blip’ the throttle, you can hear and feel a rhythmic thumping surge in the area of the gear box. This will continue until you select drive when the noise will disappear.

The temp gauge will just as suddenly return to its normal position, the rpm will drop to normal and if you blip the throttle, then there’s no banging or thumping from the gearbox.

The above can repeat itself a number of times until full operating temp is achieved, then all seems to be ok.

I’ve had it looked at by a LR Independent who can’t find the fault.

The only codes logged are U0138, 101, 151, 121 & 416.

2007 2.7 XS Auto.

Anyone any ideas?

I believe there are two coolant temp sensors. Does anyone know which one, or if both, control the temp gauge?

The one the front left corner of the engine (ie the RHS as you look under the bonnet) provides the input to the temp gauge. Given its location its really easy to fit a new one.

The thumping from the gearbox sounds a little worrisome.

Thanks for the info. If the wind ever drops below a force 10. I'll pop the bonnet and have a look.

The 'odd' thing is that the thumping through the gear box only occurs when the temp gauge drops down to zero. Once it's back to the half way mark, everything is ok.

I'm no expert when it comes to fault codes but you seem to have a load of comms errors across a number of systems.

Hi

I've had pretty much the same fault with the temp gauge dropping to min after warm up putting the car back into warm up mode. The fault has just been rectified by changing the engine oil temp sensor.

Thumbs Up

Many thanks for the info. Funnily enough I've just read a new code logged in th ecu, It's reporting a fault with the oil temp/performance, Can anyone give me the location of the oil temp sensor?
Did you experience the 'thumping,' through the gear box?
When I've sorted that out I can get on with the EPB. That's started screaming its head off.
Aren't Land Rovers great!

Hi
There was no thumping from the gearbox, nor any engine oil temp gauge faults

All the 'U' codes are communication errors, which generally, are ignored. The codes you are looking for are 'P' or 'C' codes, and they may not be stored in the Engine ECU.

You need to get the whole car scanned for faults, and go from there. It could be a fault stored in the gearbox system etc Thumbs Up

I've now got code P0196 logged, oil temp sensor.
Is it a straightforward sort of job to replace it?

Can anyone point me in the right direction of this oil temp sensor? I've searched the internet, can't find anything.

Has anyone changed one themselves?

If you look from the front, the oil temp sensor is on the right hand side, it is on the forward part of the engine, almost on the bottom. It sticks out of the engine to the right. According to LR instruction, you have to drain the engine oil and you can change the sensor (+ O ring sealing).

I got the same fault code, P0196. Throttle feels a little sicky. Where can I get a new oil temp sensor, and is it easy to change?
