Gearbox hesitation on 8 speed?

Hi all

I loved my old D3 and have always wanted another Disco - the car was perfect apart from the hesitation when coming to a near stop and then pulling away suddenly when for example slipping in to a gap from a juction. I'd find myself in no mans land with the revs climbing and going nowhere until a gear kicked in and the car lunged forward

Has the new 8 speed tranny cured this or is there a slight hesitation still?

Thanks All

Haven't tried the new 8-speed but the 2nd gen 6-speed in the D4 doesn't have this issue. The D3 had the ZF 6HP26 while the D4 has the 6HP28 (2nd generation) and the Mdl 2012 has the new 8HP70 - some interesting details in one of the graphs in this article http://www.xfforum.co.uk/threads/5501-new-Xf-gearbox-from-ZF and if you look on the ZF site they give details of how the new 8 speed works.

Cool is that the same box BMW use in the new 40d?

Is there much difference in the drive betwean the 6 speed D 4 and the 2012 D4?

I believe it is the same box as in the bmw 7 series, A8 etc - it comes in different versions capable of dealing with different torque outputs eg the D4 is 8HP70 (max 700nm torque) & I believe there is a 8HP100 that is in the Rolls!!, so not sure what the 40d would use. It's also apparently ready for stop start use although that only trims 5% off fuel (in town?) so wonder if that's in the pipeline for LR. The ZF literature claims it shifts in 200ms which puts it on a par with the twin-clutch systems in Audis!, and it can miss 6 gears in a straight shift!

I want one more than ever now. I was looking at the 40d but I still think the Disco is unbeatable

I'd say it's mostly gone but not entirely in every circumstance.

There certainly isn't that terrible lag of the D3.But what I find is the auto box doesn't want to shift into 1st at a junction so sometimes you go to pull away and haven't quite got all the power on tap.

Having said that it's fairly minor and nothing to worry about. Besides with the flappy paddles if you feel the need for a rapid get away you can always drop it down yourself.

In my 07 D3 I used to use a touch of left foot braking to help out, but on the MY12 if you touch the brake then power is cut Rolling Eyes

I doubt it will ever be eliminated in any auto diesel. I thought I had escaped it when I bought my 535d but even that has it although not as bad as mu old X5 and the disco 3.

I think this is the wrong forum fella! I think for an 8 speed tranny, you need www.thailadyboys.com or some such site ! Whistle

No it hasn't disappeared, and I find it a pain in the Censored

It's all well and good saying that you can just change down manually if needed, but in the situations where you want instant acceleration, seconds count, and as it takes time for you to realise that nothing is happening, and then time for you to realise that you need to change down manually, you could very well have lost that vital time that you required.

It would be easy to say that you need to change your driving style to avoid such situations, but sometimes it is others that put you in a situation, and one would like to think that todays automatic cars would know that when you floor it it means 'let's get the Censored out of here!

I has an acceleration problem with my Jag (along with a few other people) and although this was mentioned in a few road tests (as is the Disco 4 problem) Jaguar did not accept that there was a problem until one punter was lucky enough to have his car looked at by a dealer who persevered and it was found that there was a problem with a brake pedal linkage!!

So the moral of the story is, for those of us who do have a problem, mention it to our dealers and we may eventually get to the bottom of it. Complacency will get us nowhere!

Just searching for this subject and came across this thread.

I have had my car now for 3 weeks and around 400 miles, I like the car but the gearbox hesitation is seriously making me think about getting rid ! Mad

Today yet again I found myself trying to pull out onto a major busy road when I saw a gap and floored it, the car moved slowly until I was in the path of oncoming traffic and then 3-4secs later shoots off like a scalded cat !

I have had autos before back in 2005 and once you'd got used to them you drove accordingley, but here in 2012 with the latest gearbox LR have to offer and it's driving me daft, I'm seriously falling out of love with the thing !!

I have tried Sport which only seems to hang onto gears longer and change down at every opportunity, manual mode, but even when 1st is selected and you plant your foot, you still have to wait 2-3 seconds before any drive is taken up !

Is this a well known LR problem or is there something wrong with my 3 week old car ?

Yes when the power is available, but how long after you've applied throttle does the drive appear, instant or wait for 2-3 secs ?
