General Grabber AT review |
|
Hello all,
I recently purchased a set of 5 General Grabber AT's for my D4 and as these tyres are quite new (in Australia that is) thought i'd give everyone some feedback.
Size is 255/60/18 112XL (identical to factory Goodyear Wrangler HP) and I paid $279 a corner at Tyrepower in Berwick (VIC). This price was $30-$70 cheaper than anywhere else and they gave me $100 for my unused Wrangler HP spare, so $179 changeover. 4 wheel alignment was an additional $60.
I should mention my D4 is only 6 months old and had travelled 17k before putting the Grabbers on, so the Wrangler's still had plenty of tread on them. Therefore, my comments are not based on a comparison between worn out Wranglers and new Grabbers.
So far i've put 2k on the Grabbers which isn't much, but i've seen a lot of different conditions.
On road, they are noisier than the HP's, but not by much. If I'm not listening out for any difference, or driving with the radio on, i hardly notice a difference. And this is regardless of surface (smooth or course chip).
There is also some vibration. I didn't notice any vibration with the HP's, but there is definitely some vibration through the steering wheel and seat with the Grabbers. It's not intrusive, but it's there. I actually prefer it because more feedback comes through from the road as a result, which gives me more confidence.
Ride quality is an interesting one. Using the same pressures (40psi), i've found the ride to be (marginally) softer than before. I wasn't expecting this at all.
Grip levels - wet and dry - on tarmac seem the same as the HP's.
Steering response actually feels a little sharper than the HP's on tarmac. Again, I wasn't expecting this.
I never went off-road with the HP's so my comments on the Grabbers are in isolation. Last weekend I took a trip to the Victorian High Country and we did a number of tracks. Most were rocky with loose gravel and quite steep, but we came across some mud as well. We also did quite a bit of mileage on good dirt roads.
Traction on the steep rocky/gravelly tracks was very good. We barely had any wheelspin or loss of traction at all. Pressures were at 30psi by the way.
Performance in the mud was also good. Using the mud ruts setting (FYI - I don't have a rear locker) we got through the muddy sections without too much hassle. The tyres cleared mud quite well but we needed a bit of wheelspin to do so.
Fuel economy wise, I have noticed no change at all. Having said that, 3 days before the Grabbers were fitted I had the turbo boost adjusted (+2psi) and the boost curve altered (495Nm @ 1600 rpm after adjustment), which has the potential to improve economy. So the fuel economy effect of the tyres and boost adjustement may have cancelled each other out? However, I have noticed that throttle response is a little less snappy after fitting the tyres.
The only thing I can't comment on is the wear rate. The old AT2's (in the same size) have a treadwear rating of 640, whereas the AT's have a rating of 520. I'll be rotating them every 5k and i'm hoping for 80k but time will tell.
So in conclusion, i'm extremely happy. I looked at every single tyre option (believe me) available and i'm convinced I made the right choice.
Hope this is helpful.
Trent.

Trent,
Yes that is really helpful , thanks , as I am thinking about these.
Now all I need is someone to say what they are like in snow.

Absolutely outstanding tyre in the snow - you just have to remember that the laws of physics still apply!
You will notice a bit more noise, a little more fuel burned and a bit of vibration that comes and goes (they do tend to pick up stones etc easily on the road).
Wear rate seems very very good too.
Don't wait, get them!

Thanks Zapp. I found with my D3 which had Cooper STs as winter tyres that the big chunky tread was excellent in fresh snow but on hard packed not so good - the laws of physics again.

Hi
My D3 cames wiht GY WRANGLER, were good on road but very bad off road.
After 35.000 kms Ia changed by GG AT until now I am very happy.
It is true that they are a bit noisy (more than GY) but nothing that our radio can fix, a little more fuel burned (aroud 1 litre), but wear rate "is" very good (about more thtan 60.000kms).
Aslo is better in off road, rain, mud and snow, and is ok on road.
I my opinion, I certainly recommend

You would have to pay me to run Scorpions again...... otherwise I couldn't afford to keep up with tyre changes so often

I have been using G Grabber UHP and before that Goodyear Wrangle road tyres. I changed last week before the snow for a set of General Grabber AT - not that I do much off road but I do take my 2 ton boat down weedy launch slipways so I felt an extra bit of traction might be useful.
I am over the moon with these tyres. They give perhaps a slightly harder ride but maybe they were well pumped up by the fitter. They are not noisey and no noisier than the road tyres. The grip they gave in the snow was extraordinary on and off the road. We had great fun pulling cars out of ditches and up inclines - could have made a few bob if we had charged!!!
I paid £118 each from Alton tyres which I thought was a cracking deal. I would recommend these without question. PJ

Really good to read this - looking for some new rubber for my D3. Had a set of AT2's on my old D2 & they were fantastic - they were slightly noisier than the mish-mash that were on before, but not bad at all. Looks like I'll be getting some General Grabber AT's for the D3 then

Get rid of all four tyres & replace with GG ATs - see above.

GG AT's are excellent, I'm on my 2nd set, having managed 47k on the first ones, and the two rears are in my garage as spares, with almost 4mm of tread left
And I regularly use off road, mostly gravel tracks as part on my work, so it's not all M way use Never get mad - get even !!

how do you find they perform in snow Steve. I think they are no where near as good as the Cooper STs I had on the D3 Duncan
