Towbar removal problems
I have looked to see if this problem has been dicussed on here but can't see anything so here goes:
The previous owner of my disco 3 had left the lockable towbar fitted to the car for 2 years. I have tried to remove it but the lock is seized. I have tried WD40 heat etc but it is cream crackered. I have ordered a new lock set from landrover. Now to my question, has anyone drilled, or chiseled a barrel out of a housing and could you advise on best method. Ta muchly

have you ordered the complete green handle/lockset (they come as a kit). If you have, when you get it, the fitting instructions will make it obvious as to how to change it, and it doesnt involve chisels/drills/etc

Just done mine. It's really easy. No fitting instructions with the kit but you don't need any!

yes i had to drill mine - even though its obvious how to change it when the lock arrives - if it is totally siezed then you may need to drill it outDuncan

Thanks for the imput fellas. I can't get my head arund how you remove the towbar without unlocking it first! I have snapped both keys (which are incredably flimsy) trying to unlock it.

All will be revealed with the lock but the trick with the WD40 or similar is to drown the thing in it (drip tray or cardboard underneath to preserve marriage) backed up with a rubber mallet. Towing a load also helps release the bar from the mounting. If that fails then heating with a torch is the only way.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Ok sorry for not thinking about the security implications of my Question. I still have problems......... the old green release lever has now been removed before fitting the new one i have pulled the shaft out and tried to twist it to release the towbar but it wont twist the towbar is quite loose now but I can't remove it. I take it whhen the green lever is pulled out you then push the green lever down to release the towbar? does the towbar fall out or do you have to lift it to remove it? I am not a total loss with mechanics but this has got me stumped. I have temporaraly fitted the new green lever but all it does is pull out and expose the red cap but will not turn even though the shaft moves in and out easy. any suggestions?

Yes I could do with seeing another disco owner. I don't think I am doing anything wrong but as I have never fitted a working towbar it it possible where abouts are you?

I can't see why you'd want to remove a towbar once fitted?

Because it's a 'removable' towbar21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
