re ball joints been advised that one of mine on the front has excess play. is this going to costs the earth ? they also mentioned about both tie rods are also showing lots of play...... any suggestions welcome on time to do the work and likely costs....

I replaced both ball joints at a cost of about £40.00. This included the basic cost of the ball joints plus VAT on both the joints and delivery charge.
Time to replace both was about 1 hour. Very straight forward job -- remember to douse the balljoint nut and the locking nut with wd 40 or similar.
Torque values as follows
Balljoint nyloc nut 70 NM
Track rod locking nut 55nm
As regards worn track rods- jack up the car and see how much movement you get holding the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock positions and giving it a good wiggle. You get the impression that the track rod is moving but in all probability the movement is from the track rod end.

Thanks for this John. They said it is both front lower ball joints showing excessive play. will get them looked at when i get it serviced in a few months.
