Upper tail gate
Tail gate won't open with unlock buttons on dash. Evan both together doesn't work. But on one set of my keys the third button opens enough if I press while out side pushing button on door. Other set of keys doesn't work. Does anyone know what I need to replace?

Try pressing both lock and unlock button on dash and holding for 10 seconds while someone is pulling on the tailgate handle with pressure normally used to open it.

I tried that and it won't open. Seems strange that on one set of keys bottom button opens while gilding back door latch. Only problem is sometimes I mislay these keys and take spare ones which don't open the door

Do you get a click after pressing both lock and unlock on the dash at the same time after 10 seconds or so?

Note by pressing both lock and unlock buttons on the key and holding for three seconds it is possible to toggle between single-point entry (drivers door only) and unlocking all the doors.

Failure to open the rear tailgate, in the vast majority of cases, is either due to a/ the microswitch/microswitch linkage in the rear tailgate handle on the upper tailgate or b/ the linkage breaking in the lower tailgate.
You said "But on one set of my keys the third button opens enough if I press while out side pushing button on door" does that mean that with one of the keys, by using the programmable button and pulling on the handle at the same time, it is possible to open the tailgate this still work?

If you are able to open the rear tailgate via the third button on the remote (pulling at the same time), but not the switch under the rubber cover on the real tailgate handle, then it is probably the microswitch in the tailgate handle that is faulty.
By removing the rubber cover you may be able to clean it out and get it working (the rubber cover is not a very good seal and lets water etc in especially if pressure washed).
If this does not work then the part you need is LR007099 Land Rover Discovery 3 Tailgate Handle (Stornoway Grey) which is available from site sponsor Duckworth Parts (via link at top of page) for £21.00 plus VAT plus cariage (free to forum member in UK).
However, it is a mystery why pressing and holding the lock and unlock buttons on the dash and pulling at the same time does not work.
