Rotary Coupler Wiring Fracture - SB Q045 D3 MY05 - 06

Well Trickers come back from the dealer today and yet again its presented me with a bill, this time around £500 for the above.

However, I think someone in the dealers is trying to tell me something by leaving a copy of the Service Bulletin on the dash board..... Whistle

So the above is related to MY 05-06 and dated 30th Sept 2010 and then re-issued by LR with an extended expiry date of Dec 2011 - which has peed me off know end as the vehicle has been serviced on numerous occassions by LR during the period - IT RELATES TO IMPROVEMENTS IN ORDER TO STOP THE POTENTIAL OCCURANCE BUT NOT THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ACTUAL ROTARY COUPLER.

What's more annoying is the bulletin says under "Action to be Taken" - At the next available service opportunity you are requested to carry out a modification to the affected vehicles.

So my question to all before I tackle LR in writing:

a) Has anyone had this done during the period of Sept 2010 - 31st Dec 2011 OR HAD THE COUPLING REPLACED without the vehicle showing any symtoms but paid for under warranty

b) Has anyone had this done outside of that period with LR paying the bill again whether the vehicle shows symptoms or not

Your input would be gratefully recieved as its seems to me that the service bulletin clearly states it effects MY 05-06 and should have/could have been picked up during its normal servicing. Whistle

This has also peed off my next door neighbour who runs a RRS on MY05 who also paid for the repair during last year. Shocked

The Bulletin reads

" It is possible that the wires that connect the drivers airbag module to the rotary coupler on RRS and Discovery 3 vehicles could fracture. This may lead to an open circuit and the SRS warning light being illuminated on the instrument cluster.

The wiring that connects the rotary coupler to the drivers air bag module may fracture as a result of relative motion between the rotary coupler and the steering wheel hub. This relative motion may be caused by factors such as internal friction caused by contact of the steering column cowl against the rotary coupler. Rotary coupler internal friction is caused by distortion of the steering column switch mounting platform as a consequence of mis-alignment of a location point on the steering coloum assembly"

Had mine done at Rovertune recently, was getting airbag warning. Did ask if there was a recall on it but said not, so paid for it...nothing like £500 though!

Just had a service done (MY06) & no mention of this. Any VIN range? Sounds like one to ignore unless the light comes on.

PS If it was done and not charged would the dealer let you know? Also is the rotary coupler same as clock spring? Wouldn't want mine changed as its a heated wheel one.

but if it does get replaces won't they fit the later one with heated wiring on there, as earlier basic model NLA, or is that rubbish?

Don't know but mine was an aftermarket fit so not part of the official spec, no chance of getting it on LR then I'd haven thought. Plus the present clock spring is an MY09 one so hopefully fixed by then.

Have had this done on both my previous D3 and my RRS. Both had same symptoms where pressing cruise control would increase volume on stereo etc etc. Both were done under the TSB you refer to but never was aware of date issue (both were before dec 11 though). Wasnt ever even remotely questioned by dealer. All i can guess is now cars getting to certain age, the early models with clock spring of old design are getting to point where could be classed as fair wear and tear. I would be arguing that to death with LR though. Good luck and keep us posted

Nick, cheers for that - seems a letter for a "goodwill gesture" to LR for:

a) Rotary Coupling
b) Rear cross member/new fixed tow hitch kit
c) New engine after NINE recon LR injectors have been replaced in 25k miles and 12 twelve weeks despite the compression test claiming that there is nothing wrong!

No offence, but I can't see a goodwill gesture being granted for a rear crossmember on a vehicle with nearly 500k miles on it!
