AA read 11.19 just after battery fitted.
11.19 is about 10% charge, i.e very nearly totally flat.
Surprised it started the car at that voltage. Fully charged should be 12.6v.

Great write up, used it this morning. Having a 13mm ratchet spanner made it so much easier!54 D3 TDV6 AUTO HSE - Oct13 > Present

Bit the bullet and new density alternator arrives Tuesday from advanced factors. Good price £205 all up with delivery and 5% forum discount. Pretty good when dealer quoting 440 + vat !
Am i ok to re connect battery ? I have the fan disconnected. I want to get into boot to remove rear bumper and check rear sensors while I wait for alternator

Great guide, helped me out today only thing I found was it was easier to get to the lower alternator bolts by removing the small cover that's in front of the drivers wheel

Did this today due to alternator frying itself yesterday and shorting everything out. The hardest part is getting the fan off with out proper tool to hold the hub. I bought the 36 mil fan spanner in Halfords, but had to buy a shelf bracket from b &q which I butchered to make a hub holding tool. It's bank holiday Saturday and it was the only place I could buy anything resembling metal bar.
Note that I drilled 2 holes to bolt on with the hub bolts and cut out he slot to go around he fan nut, but found i didn't make it quite right on the first attempt, so I was about to "adjust" it wihen I realised I could just use one bolt to hold it and lean it against the second bolt to hold the hub. Worked a treat.
Thanks for the guide

Again, excellent guide on the forum
Diagnosed 8:30am Wednesday morning (Vbat low even when engine revved), ordered replacement from Steve @ AF 9:00am and removed old one in the evening (30mins). Replacement arrived 8:30 this morning and <40 minutes to having the car running again without battery light
I used 3/8 ratchet+13mm socket for the alternator bolts and open ended 13mm spanner for the electrical terminal so ratchet spanners are not necessary. As I'd done cam belts earlier this year, I had the fan spanner and tool to hold it in stock. I would definitely recommend spending the few quid on them rather using hammers etc.
And to cap it all, the sun is out

Alternator out and the bottom bolts have sheared. Nothing to get hold of so I'll need to drill them out. Am I right in thinking there is a bracket I can take off to get at these bolts.

Massive thanks to Methley for taking the trouble to post this guide. Having had the dreaded battery light come on just 3 days into my first Disco ownership, with funds a bit tight, I was dreading putting the car into the local Indie.
Following the guide, I'm pleased to say that everything came apart as it should, with the whole job only taking a couple of hours - and that included a trip to the local Motor Factor to pick up a new Denso!
All in all saved me a quoted £150 labour charge
Just one point I learned - it was easy to trap the red boot that shrouds the main +ve terminal as I tightened the nut up. Just as well I checked carefully with a torch hence was able to rectify.
Hope that I've done the fan back up tight enough!

Thank you for posting this excellent guide which has enabled me to replace mine today after my red warning light appeared yesterday...
I found a discount code for EuroParts so price was £251 Incl. which is about £20 more than the online supplier mentioned earlier, however it allowed me to do it whilst it's not raining and get back on the road quickly.
I had some difficulty freeing the fan nut. After a few attempts I had a 10mm ring spanner as a brace as shown above. I warmed the nut using a heat gun, which might have helped and used my hammer handle to push down hard on the other end of this spanner whilst I gave the big adjustable a good whack with a hammer.
I also used my hammer handle to push the tensioner whilst I removed the belt.
Thanks again! if I hadn't checked on this forum this morning I would have driven around today and probably destroyed my quite new expensive battery Rob

Great post, made the change over idiot proof.
The fan didn't wanna play ball but a long 1/4" extension soon sorted that (pics below)
thanks

Job done thanks to this fantastic post.
1.5 hours.
My takeaways;
Nothing is ever seized on Australian cars like UK cars!
The last technique of an extension bar to brace the waterpump works a treat.
Can do the job without a ratchet spanner to remove the lower bolts (just slow).
Can just fit a 13mm socket in to tighten up the lower bolts holding the ratchet head with the other hand.
Getting it out is actually a tight squeeze to push past the hoses.
The top nut on the +ve wire is a real to get located and started without dropping it. Could not get the rubber boot to p-off out of the way. Took me a while to realise how the cable seats into the alternator.
