I have seen a number of posts that suggest that the lower steering column bush is known to be the culprit of knocking being felt on the steering wheel.
Does anyone have any pictures of what it looks like or have any advice on how to change it? I've heard it's not difficult but couldn't find any "how to" guides.
Thanks Nick! That's really useful! It doesn't seem so scary. I'll give it a crack once I've done the wishbones etc.
Thanks again chaps

It's an easy job, you'll need a Torx socket of the correct size though. I bought a set, the ones that come attached to a metal rail. Just adds a tenner to the job.

.....was going very slowly down an appalling farm track this morning, and the steering wheel was bucking around all over the place in my hands....accompanied by a horrible clattering/knocking sound...I think this post may point me in the direction of the culprit (although I don't think my lower suspension arms are too clever either)
Just wondered if you had done this, and did it make a difference ??"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Could be a few things Euan. Front lower arms or inner track rods. If these are OK, look at the lower column My D3 Build Thread

Tim, how was yours resolved?
Euan - not yet, will be doing the lower arms/track rod ends this weekend. If that doesn't fix it then I'll do the steering bush.
Will keep you posted

I changed my passenger side wishbone today. The 'how to' is linked below.
I am yet to do the main culprit - the driver side. Will report back once it is done.
Another possible cause of your clunking could be your anti roll bar bushes. These are another known problem area.
I noticed that the Publish date on the top of the PDF is 2006. I have the LR3 Workshop manual which shows that it was published in 2004. My version doesn't have the detailed info that this PDF has.
Is there a newer Workshop Manual for the LR3/D3?
Thanks if someone can reply!!2006 LR3 HSE Java Black

Topix is the only true workshop manual and sections do get refreshed reasonably often but in a haphazard way. This can mean that the V8 diagram could be more modern than the TDV6 or vice versa. I suspect you have a pdf or html version of Topix that reflects the date is was stripped from the original. If you want the latest and greatest you can purchase on-line subscription.
