Have the same knocking with slightly sagged harmonic balancers (270,000ks and lotza corrugations). I can actually push them up and knocking stops.
What really limited the knocking was new rear shocks, I think the lack of effective dampening made the balancers sway more. It's hard to tell when shockies are shot as the airbags seem to hold the vehicle fairly rigid.
FYI to replace the harmonic balancers is a body off job  D3 TDV6
