Spare wheel carriers

I think my next major mod will be a swing away wheel carrier. I have just fitted the RLD Wheel protector today and having the K9draw system in the back I can see a potentional nightmare. The box has to come out to get to the spare release bolt. I am thinking with a boot full of stuff on top and possibly bad weather it would be a good mod to have. Plus nice to have two spares for the next overland trip. Question is which one. I always want the best. If it take twice as long to save then so be it. But I don't want to buy the most expensive thinking its the best when maybe its not. Can anyone shed any light on which one you would buy/ pro's and con's to having one. Parking sensors could be a problem? Also what it would cost to fit. Is there any deals knocking about on these? I think the mrs would cut my Censored off if she knew the cost of these!

I've had the Big Country and now have the Rasta.

The BC is a heavy lump and a little more 'rough' - the Rasta is IMHO the better of the two.

Fitting of either is easy - no special tools needed - good drill bits, decent hacksaw, some spanners and, most importantly, patience.

Pros - carry 2 spares, easy access to spare, if you get a rear end shunt the car that hits you explodes....

Cons - have to open it to access boot

Rear parking sensors work fine - I just 'blanked' the one beneath the handle with a rubber patch off a bicycle repair kit.

I use the Front Runner unit. Bought it 2 yrs ago and have been to Bots twice + Namibia x1 and 35 000 klms of tar without a worry and it is still solid, IMHO pretty good for all the corrugated gravel it's been on. Don't know if you can get them over there or what your prices are but I have been quite happy with this.......I carry two wheels now.

I have the Big Country carrier that SpiderBaby used to have (I think). £600 to fit a carrier is taking the Censored - its not a big job. Well worth fitting if you can get one at a sensible price. The Pro speed one will be interesting, not sure it's going to be along the same lines as the others that are available at the moment and it has been just around the corner for a long time.

Thanks for the replies guys. The also said they would need it for two days. I need to do more pricing and then make a decision.

Shocked 2 days

Even if you've never removed the rear bumper and need to work out how it shouldn't take more than a 2-3 hours at a leisurely pace to fit a RWC

OK - that is my old BC carrier and they are taking the pi55 big time on fitting costs of £600 / 2 days.

I did mine over a weekend helped by my (then) young son. The only reason I did it over a weekend is I started late on the Sat and took my time - I need lots of tea / pee breaks at my age....

I also bought Waxoyl type paint to do the bumper etc with while I had access and wanted it to dry off were possible before moving on. It's well worth doing this while you're there IMHO.

Cutting the bumper is no big deal - just double (triple) check your measurements / marks before cutting. I (or rather my lad) just used a decent hacksaw.

Thumbs Up

It took me three hours to fit - I whizzed the bumper end off with an angle grinder. The worst aspect was re-fitting the bumper - I had to enlarge the latch hole to give me some wriggle room. Thumbs Up

The email went like this

Hi Mark

Yes as we said £1200.00 plus Vat including swingaway carrier and fitting. The labour content being £600.00 plus VAT. We have been generous on the discount for the wheel carrier as you can see from our website, the cost of wheel carrier is £871.00 plus VAT.

We appreciate it is a “Big Spend” item and therefore would require the vehicle for two days – as a rushed job always incurs problems and further headaches
