Side step quality
The aluminium trim came loose from my side step so I decided to take them off to fix it, this is what I found

I used to have a Fiat that reacted the same way to Scottish weather/road salt....I wire-brushed them and re-attached the trims with self-tappers "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Its hard to see from the photos but the steel has actually rotted right through in parts and its not just surface corrosion, its all the way through.
I wouldn't trust them now to take the weight of an adult so I will just replace them, but not with Genuine Parts at around £600 though
Have to say I am pretty disappointed with the quality of these Genuine Parts

Obviously they've not been on that long so can't comment on how well they will last, but they are well made and pretty robust....plus there is no cutting required

My ally trim came off of one side at the weekend when jet washing it, the pop rivets had completely corroded away, looked like they are ally ones so replaced with stainless steel rivets. I managed to do the repair with the side step still bolted to the car!! I was thinking about taking them off, stripping them down & having them shot blasted then powder coated! D3 HSE Zermatt Silver

at £145 delivered, they are a hell of a lot cheaper than Genuine Parts and to be honest I can't see the quality being any worse

If I did that I don't think there would be much left of them to powder coat

Just received my new steps and comparing them against the original parts ones they are exactly the same, apart from the rust. The steel thickness is the same, the welding points are the same, aluminium trim profile the same and the treadplates are the same.
They even fit onto the original brackets so no need to replace them. Included in the box was the Genuine Landrover instruction leaflet for fitting. If I didn't know better I would say they were made in the same factory
Genuine Parts = £600 + delivery, AE ones £145 delivered, bit of a no brainer

I put my foot through the drivers side sidestep on ours because they were so corroded and they were genuine. I've bought some after market ones for £150 and painted the underside with Hammerite (Other makes are available )
Stuff the price Land Rover want for them to have them disintegrate. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

I have just used virtually a whole can of spray grease (thanks Disco Mikey) on my new steps before fitting them. I have sprayed it into every seam and joint then covered the underside with black waxoyl. Hopefully that will keep the rust at bay
They look like a good buy and a very good price.. you can't beat a good dose of grease...

Side step rot
Thought I would rejuvenate this thread as I'm astonished by the shockingly poor quality of the OEM side steps fitted to my 3.
Last year I discovered that the near side aluminium trim was missing, clearly suffered from the usual fastener rot. (Replaced with a 3rd party piece from ebay as obviously can't get just the trim from LR!)
This weekend we were away with the tin tent and whilst SWMBO was out getting fuel I noticed a piece of rusty steel approximately 6 inched by 4 inches deposited where the car was parked. Turns out the entire side step has now rotted through completely with just the rubber top still in place.
I can't believe these things are still being sold by LR as a £1000 dealer fit option, they should be ashamed of themselves. Yes the car is a few years old but rust to this extent reminds me of Alfa Romeo of the 70's
Anyway if anyone has advice on non EOM side steps that I can fit to my, soon to be delivered 4, I would appreciate it.
