Which diagnostic tool

I have been considering getting a diagnostic tool or a fault code reader.
I realise there are quite a few options available

I have never had one of these so ease of use would be helpfull too. Or in simple terms idiot proof
Does anyone have a rough guide of the cost for these also is there any which too avoid.
Can someone also explain ( in plain English) exactly what these do and can be used for.
My d3 has not been tampered with, still all original, as far as I know anyway
Any help making my mind up is appreciated

I have a 57 plate xs if this makes any difference

Thanks to all you knowledgeable lot out there.

Thumbs Up

Just bought myself a Hawkeye. For the money, it does seem to be good value, and does most things that the majority of owners will want to do Thumbs Up /

IID Tool by GAP diagnostic (sold through Britpart) is great.
Costs around £310 or so I believe.

You can read and clear faults, monitor live values (eg. check out compressor gallery pressure in real time, etc etc). You also have some pretty extensive Car Configuration possibilities (eg. activate cruise control if you fitted the appropriate buttons to the steering wheel), and starting with the upcoming v2.18 firmware you will also be able to flash ECUs with software upgrades.

All done without the need to hook up laptops or other equipment. It's all done through the LCD display on the dashboard. Only requirement is having the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel if you don't already have them. I believe GAP can also provide an alternative to the cruise control button control that involves using the indicator stalk but I guess that's a bit more of a pain to use.

+1 for IID Tool

Loads of functionality at a reasonable price.

Locks down to your VIN, but more can be added.

United Kingdom 2013 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Baltic BlueDiscovery 4

1st = IID Tool (NB locked to VIN - but watch this space...)
2nd = Hawkeye (this may be first for some as it is not locked to a vehicle)
3rd = FCR (quality feel but too expensive and feature limited for a VIN locked product).

Edit (as things have progressed - Jun 14):

1st = IID Tool Bluetooth (CCF functions and EAS memory locked to VIN, the rest VIN-free)
2nd = BBS Nanocom (new product that is maturing nicely)
3rd = IID Tool (non-bluetooth version)
4th = Hawkeye (not locked to VIN)
5th = BBS FCR (quality feel but too expensive and feature limited for a VIN locked product)

I have owned some of these and I have played with pretty much everything. The MSV does not make the list as it is a specialist product that is incredibly powerful and with an eye-watering price. The multi-vehicle version needs to work hard to recoup the money and I am not sure the single-vehicle version makes sense either as it is easier and cheaper to get one of the forum chaps to do the enabling. The new BBS D3 Nanocom did indeed change the batting order hence the edit above.

My choosing for the Hawkeye was the price, and the fact it is not VIN locked Thumbs Up

Iid here, great functions, regular updates and Bluetooth conectivity on the way.

Unless you NEED vin free, the iid is the only one to buy IMO.
