Quote:Pom that looks pretty darn good. Daft question maybe but where is the best place to attach that to the back of a D3? Can you use the holes behind the cover for the towing electrics to attach something like that? Â
The recovery point is behind the towing electrics cover and this is what should be used. Best to avoid using the tow bar if possible as it's not as strong. I've got my cover removed and have left it removed for the last few weeks. Also don't use a cheap nylon tow rope. They are not strong enough. As others have said some strops from lifting and crane with a couple of shackles is ideal. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Just to clarify this, the "holes" referred to are for the fitment of the towing electrics sockets ... Not suitable as recovery points.
Use the circular recovery eye (between those two holes) as previously posted by Stu. ____

Sorry the recovery eye was the thing I was refering to (as have towing electrics anyhow) but couldn't think how to describe it properly yesterday, at least I now know what to call it
Good call antoniasdad as my poor choice of language might have lead someone to believe that you could loop a rope through the electric socket holes, which probably wouldn't have been good as you say

I couldn't believe my ironic luck today.
A bloke and his missus in our village have a 'Pious' and are total tree huggers and anti 4x4. They can't go anywhere as a result of the snow in our village so they'd been shopping by using the train. It's a bit of a hike from the station to their house and they were laden down. I was driving by the station taking my neighbour to work as he couldn't move with his car either. Imagine my surprise when these people stopped me and pleaded with me to take their shopping to their house. I did it for them and drove off with a huge sense of satisfaction that I'd stuck it to them in a most appropriate way. Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

Seriously impressed with the D3 now.
Last night, I came across an articulated car transporter stuck on a gentle hill on the industrial estate where I work.
I cheekily asked the driver if he would like a tow. He accepted my offer and the rope went on.
Snow mode on.
Low range 2nd.
TC on.
I towed him to the end of the estate without any fuss, just let the D3 work it out.
When removing the rope, he announced, "my boss has one of these Discoveries, and he has recovered me once already. They are great".
The guy was on his way & I had that happy grin all the way home.

what does the towed driver do?
do they drive to assist or just steer? never figured that bit out!
seems like what you towed will be a fair bit more than the 3500kg quoted so would be interested to know
also what strength rope did you use? XC90 T8 R Design Pro

I agree - though the legalities of road towing differ from recovery towing in all manner of ways - but what is the limit of the D3 for recovery towing?? Wouldn't like to pull the recovery eye off LOL

Can you explain why the it not a good idea to use the towbar? I was thinking about looping one end of the rope over my towbar, and the other end with a shackle to the recover loop of "the person who is to be recovered" vehicle.. "...I'm so broke I can't even pay attention..."

The rope can slip off, over the top of the towing ball.
If you use a shackle through the recovery eye there's no chance of that. ____

3500kg is dead weight. You aren't actually pulling 22t straight up, just moving it from stationary.

I pulled the car transporter using my big rope (came off an ex royal navy minesweeper that belonged to my employer at the time). It's a long story why my employer had a minesweeper.
The rope is two inches in diameter and almost 50 feet long. It used to be 100 feet long but I cut it & re-spliced the ends to make two ropes. One for me and one for a friend.
When doubled up to shorten the length, it requires big shackles.
Always make sure that the shackles are up to the job.
I always secure any rope with a shackle & never never put a rope over a towball. They do come off.............!!
If I am going to pull or winch something big, I always use a safety loop at either end.
I use a secondary anchor point in case something breaks. This helps to prevent a shackle or rope shooting through someones windscreen or a through a person.
One shackle goes through the recovery eye and one through the ball & pin on the tow bar.
The last heavy thing that I recovered was a fire tender which was bogged down on the front lawn of a golf club.
The only way that I could get it out was using my tirfor secured to an enormouse tree.
Plenty of firemen helping to take turns.
Damned hard work I can tell you.
Many years ago I watched someone recovering a Rangerover with a kinetic energy recovery method.
Needless to say that it didn't go to plan & the Rangerovers towing eye snapped off & hit my Landrover.
That was an important lesson to all of us present at the time. Mitsubishi Outlander Phev 4H 2018.
