Viscous fan problem in morning
Hi
Apologies if this has been talked about manytimes. I am new to the site and have found it to be very useful.
My Problem -
Most mornings as I back out of driveway and start my journey the viscous fan is running at full speed with the engine revs, so as I begin to pull away and the engine speed raises so does the engine fan speed, with windows close etc it's very loud! But within a short time, about 20secs or about 200metres it then drops and you can no longer hear it.
Hope I've explained that well enough! It's as if the clutch on the fan is locked in first thing and as you pull away and the engine revs come up it as if a high speed huge fan is blowing!
It also does this on the odd occasion in the afternoon.
Temp outside does not seem to make a difference.
At all over times this does not happen.
Thanks in advance.

That was quick, thank you.
The reason I posted this now was it's only just started doing that, had the car about a month and the last couple of weeks I've noticed it...who know's maybe it always did it lol.
Thanks again, peace of mind is good!

Welcome to the weird world of D3 ownership (and here!!). Even after over 4 years if owning them I still think "That's new" or "it hasn't done that for a while". I still don't know what the lights on the LHS heating controls mean.

Just thought I'd say this is why I like this forum. I have had exactly the same thing..............owned the car 2 months.............fan caper only started last week or so.
I feel better now. Thanks to all.
Cheers

Treetops, as already stated above what you describe is normal. However, if you find that this noise becomes more common e.g. whilst driving along a motorway, then a common cause is a blocked intercooler (especially if the vehicle has ventured off road, see this thread for an example of a blocked i/c

What about the opposite behavior?
I'm used to the roar of the fan immediately when I crank the engine. But it seems that lately, the fan doesn't begin to turn/roar until several minutes after cranking.
is this still normal?2013 LR4 HSE lux | Santorini Black | 5.0 V8
