Wayhay - driven one at last

Had a quick drive of a local demo car (XS) from a desolate forecourt this weekend.

been looking forward to it for weeks since looking at one when it came out.

So what is it like (all been said before i know but humour me Whistle )

New dash/console is pleasant in the dark - although the graphics on the rev counter and speedo take a bit of getting used to.
Extra info on the dash is also nice but long overdue (you need a silver one as well to match the image Wink )

Drives very nicely, handles better than the D3. However very noticeable getting straight from mine into the D4 were several things:
- The ride is much worse and had two queasy rear seat passengers after 10 mins down one of our local back roads
- The engine noise is much harsher and wheezier, seems to have lost the "creaminess" of the older 2.7's.
- Lag from rest has gone, but accelerator behaved on demo car like mine does in GGS?
- Can't comment on gearbox as this car was driven by cast of thousands but seemed very similar to mine.
- It goes Ok and with 4000 miles on the clock test car was averaging 29.6 mpg which is impressive for a hack car Thumbs Up

So in the end a bit disappointed.......getting back into my "old" one didn't seem that backward a step. On the way home over partly the same route, it sounded better, rode much better, went quick enough and I can cope with the roll on roundabouts.

However of course I will eventually get one but for the moment the differential between my 2005 HSE and a 2010 HSE is £40K Shocked (they don't want p/ex do they?)

A newer D3 and a tune maybe seems to do the job nicely
 end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

I can only assume either duff engine or duff ears in that case ! Wink

The one I drove had the same noisy engine. No where near as refined as the 2.7L TDV6.

I thought the 09 model Disco3 with the 2.7 were also harsher due to some emissions thing. I seem to remember people posting about it

Completely duff yup Whistle

What CW says about later D3's also being harsher is correct. However I didn't have one of those handy to compare with so it was only my 2005 2.7 and a 2009 3.0. In this case there was a very noticeable difference.


Obviously I am a luddite still........ Wink

forgot to mention I think the front looks OK now, familiarity and all that.......... Whistle

Before I got mine I drove my 2.7 D3 manual to the dealers and went straight out on a test drive. D4 3.0 was a lot smoother and not as noisey. I have had mine for a month now and doen 1300 miles in it, it is averaging 26 and is still very quite. there is a small ticking noise on tick over but i know what that is and will be getting the dealer to look at it when it goes in next time. As a whole it is a lot quiter than the D3 so all I can assume is you had a duff one

Sounds a bit odd to me. Mine is far quieter than either of the D3s, the gearbox is far smoother, and I couldn't honestly say that the ride was any different from the last D3. Those old timers amongst you will recall that the early D3s, before LR installed an update, were very smooth on the road.

The one comment I'd make about the D4 is that you find yourself easing along at 55-60 on country roads entirely effortlessly, whereas the D3 was much harder work. My perception is that the D4 is a considerable step forward from the D3.....and what fun it would be if it was a manual too.

I'd agree with the ride quality not being quite what I remember on the D3 that I tested. Esp. for rear (middle row) seat passengers who have complained of feeling every bump Sad Ride in the front is good but much firmer than I remember the D3 being. Reminds me of the difference between BMW sport and normal suspension (albeit not quite as pronounced). The engine is very quiet but you can hear a light ticking which ISTR LR mentioned in their original press release as being due to the type of injectors.
I'll happily trade these gripes for the addiitonal performance that lets me to put my foot down on a country road and overtake safely with ease Very Happy

2010 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 HSE Auto Ipanema SandDiscovery 4

Our 2005 D3S was as smooth as silk and soft as a babies. Almost felt like an electric engine. But only 23mpg.
Our 2007 D3HSE was a complete bag of spanners in comparison. Never liked driving that. But 27mpg
Our 2009 D4HSE is much smoother, quicker and a tad better fuel consumption than the 2007 version.

I believe LR changed the ignition timing on 2006 onwards vehicles to improve fuel consumption - but made for a rougher ignition cycle as a result.

sounds very much like normal LR. Every car is a bit difference.

Got a colleague picking up his XF-S next week, will be interesting to compare Thumbs Up

I think if they changed the ignition timing on a TDV6 they must have a very advanced diesel engine Whistle

But if you mean injector timing, then I think you're right - ISTR that this is one of the things they modified for EURO IV compliance and lots of people commented that it made it somewhat noisier....

Saying that....I was sat in a MY09 TDV6 the other day and it seems (at least at idle) a touch smoother than my MY06 - not sure what it would be like whilst moving through the rev range though...
