What is this white sensor on the back of the mirror? (Pic)

I am trying to position a dash-cam as discretely as possible, and it will fit high up by the rear view mirror, but will partially obscure this white sensor from having a clear view forwards out of the windscreen.

Could anybody enlighten me on its purpose?

I think its the light sensor that drives the auto-dip in the rear view mirror Thumbs Up

I may be wrong but wouldn't the auto-dim sensor be looking backwards as it dims the mirror when someone has their full beam on behind?

(As far as I am aware the 'High Beam Assist' sensor for the factory fitted auto dip headlights is a much bigger contraption mounted below the mirror mount on the screen, but I am no expert, hence the query).

I thought it used that sensor to compare light at front with light coming up behind - i.e. front checks if its dark and rear (somewhere) checks how bright that thing is coming up behind Thumbs Up

could be very mistaken though Rolling with laughter Laughing :

I guess I could take the very technical approach of putting a piece of black insulation tape over it and see what happens!
