Feeling unstable

For a while now, my 2005 Disco 3, TDV6 has felt quite unstable in certain situations. At first, I wondered if it was just down to the fact that I've been driving a sports car that handles in an extremely precise manner through the summer and the feeling of instability is just down to the difference betweeen the two cars. However, the more I drive the Disco, the more I think that it cannot just be down to that.

On a straight, flat bit of road the Disco feels fine, but on cornering it can feel like being in a strong cross wind, and can require a quick adjustment to the steering to keep it on the road. It is particularly bad if I need to apply the brakes when going around a bend. There feels like a lot of "roll to the body" (if that makes sense) and then the can lurches from one side to the other.

I'm wondering if it might be due to wheel alignment issues, so I'll get that checked, but would be interested to know what others think this might be due to.

Thanks.

I think you are correct re wheel alignment, best get it booked in for a Hunter four wheel alignment check.

As I've not had the wheels aligned for some years, it's certainly overdue. I'll get it done.

Another thing that might be causng this is that looking at the most recent MOT (late October), one of the monitor and repair if necessary issues was . . .

"Front Anti-roll bar pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Clamp bushes"

I'm think that could also be causing the problem.

Have you checked tyre pressures and condition? Mine had a set of tyres on when I bought it that had worn very odd, swapped them round on the car and it made quite a difference.

Thanks Jenksy. One of my tyres is near the limit, so that could be contributing, but I'd be surprised if it accounts for everything. Pressures are fine. Perhaps I have a combination of things contributing to this ... partly worn tyre, partly worn anti roll bar bushes, wheels out of alignment. I'll tackle one at a time to see what if anything works.

I’d be checking the bushes on the rear upper arms, when they are worn they tend to give uncontrolled (!) slight rear wheel steering which makes the car handle poorly, especially noticeable on conurey roads that you know, and feel like you should be able to handle better Thumbs Up

Interesting thought CDS, but I reckon that would have been picked up at the MOT late in October. I have my MOTs done by a Landy specialist firm who I've used for nearly 15 years and they are always very good. I'm not getting any knocking from the back end either, which I think I might hear if the bushes are bad. Could be just wishful thinking on my part, as I'd rather not tackle that job. I'll go for the easier/cheaper jobs first to see if I can fix things that way. Think it'll be a process of elimination.

I had a rear upper arm bush fail and had no knocking noises at all but when jacked up the play was massive! worth a look.

+1 for rear upper arms... I bought a D3 down in London and the whole of the drive back to Scotland was like driving on ice... a quick visit to DM and new rear upper bushes and she drove sweet as.. Very Happy
