How d'yer check the wheel bearings are ok

just a quick thread, no doubt t'others would appreciate the advice from a novice point of view.

My tyres are close to getting changed, around 3mm left on wranglers M&S (which are noiser than conti). Recon with all this flood water and the duration since they were replaced, might have a look at the wheel bearing this weekend.

Have a 2.5ton trolley jack, usual procedure aka put in the ORH, then take the key out etc.

I assume the following:

1) Put the vehicle in off road height

2) Pu in to neutral

2) Leave off the EPB

3) Stick some chocks on the rear wheel when jacking up the front, then visa-versa when doing the front

4) Jack up each wheel at a time, spin the wheel and listen for any grating noise, wiggle the wheel looking for play

5) repeat the process on each wheel

Any thing else? Thumbs Up

Wiggle them at 12 and 6 o'clock if play then likely wheel bearings especially if play disappears when brakes applied

If I remember rightly

But bow to superior knowledge

cheers for that.....and for the novice....12-6 means:

Hold the wheel at the top with one hand (12) and the bottom (6) with the other, wiggle um Thumbs Up

I'll check the road ends at 9-3 whilst at it Thumbs Up

Bow down

if it wobbles the bearing is on the way out, however, it can still be on the way out and not wobble Evil or Very Mad

had that on the D3 enroute to Spain. all OK (or so it seemed) when we left Bristol, got to Beziers and the bearing collapsed !!

A hands clean method with minimal effort is to look at the tyre wear and if it is excessive on the outside corner of the tyre then the bearing is starting to fail. Come look and mine and I'll show you. Big Cry
